Forums - General - Did EA break up with Nintendo because...

...Nintendo wanted to allow used games on their system?

If the Xbox rumour turns out to be true, alongside the similar one for Sony, then it could suggest that developers have been pressuring the Big 3 behind the scenes to stop second-hand games being able to run on their system. Appealing to the 3rd parties is extremely important for all the major manufacturing companies, so is it completely unreasonable to suggest that they've attempted to get on their good side by agreeing to this measure?

It's an interesting theory, although we still know next to nothing about Sony and Microsoft's next-gen offerings.

However, if it is true, Nintendo made the absolute right decision.

Based on the rumors, this happened because Nintendo didn't agree to use Origin as their online store. However, whatever the reason was, i could care less about EA.

They hadn't with the Wii?

EA made a decent effort with Wii. With Wii U they sent a couple launch titles out to die, and now don't even seem to be putting Madden on it anymore.

Nintendo has had a rocky relationship with 3rd parties ever since the SNES and releasing an under powered console in 7th gen and now with the WiiU doesnt really help. now i wont get into the argument of gameplay vs graphics or how graphics dont matter. the thing is it does matter to 3rd parties, why? to market their games. what was one of the main reasons battlefield 3 got so much hype in 2011? its new engine and how good it looked. there were other reasons but people automatically got interested with its good looks

now WiiU released and its about the same as PS3/360 when it comes to power. the console has only a 3 million install base and nintendo is trying to sell the console to PS360 owners. so why would some 3rd parties even bother porting there games? since alot of new WiiU owners already have PS360 and porting it to the WiiU wont give them a new marketing tool by displaying how cool and awesome it looks.

3rd parties want to make money, its that simple. the problem is with nintendo's strategy not nintendo them selfs. they want to attract the "core" gamers yet they give them the same experience with 3rd parties, they made the WiiUpad to differentiate them selfs then they give you the pro controller to secure 3rd parties, resulting in you having the exact same experience that you can get on your ps360 or even worse. nintendo's strategy is messed up, they want everything. they want the core, the casuals, the kids and the adults. but thats just impossible. if 3rd parties can make money on the WiiU, trust me they will try. but as of now honestly why would they even bother?

I think it's more to do with Nintendo not wanting EAs Origin

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

I keep reading that EA is angry at Nintendo because they changed their minds about allowing Origin on the Wii U. Someone have anything close to proof of that?

Does everyone forget E3 2011? John Ricitiello himself went on-stage at Nintendo's press conference, and announced that, with the Wii U, EA and Nintendo would be enjoying an "unprecedented partnership," implying a more intimate 3rd party/manufacturer relationship than has ever existed.

E3 2012: No EA on stage. Gimped Madden, gimped Mass Effect 3, promised Battlefield 3 port is gone.

In between is????

Now we have the "Origin" theory. While assuming that there is no "evidence" for any sort of large scale breakup, we have what Ricitiello talked up at E3 2011 to go by. Namely, he seemed to indicate that the great thing about Wii U was how Nintendo would allow third parties to use their own online networks in lieu of a centralized Nintendo experience. It's possible that EA pushed ahead from there, asking for Origin to be the very framework upon which the Wii U online experience was founded, a seeming win-win for EA and Nintendo: EA's struggling Steam alternative would be foisted upon an entire userbase (depending on how successful Wii U became, 40 to 80 million new users), while the online-noob Nintendo would get a mature network. The losers in this scenario being Activision (imagine, Call of Duty forced to run through Origin for Wii U players) and every other third party. Knowing that it would be bad for consumers and bad for other 3rd parties, Nintendo pulls back. So EA gets butthurt, cancels any Wii U project they can, and sends all other Wii U projects out to die (Mass Effect, NFS Most Wanted, Madden, FIFA)

And those familiar with EA's history know that butthurt and petty, spiteful revenge are not beyond EA. EA tried to threaten Sega to not make the 2K Sports series on Dreamcast, and when Sega proceeded to do so, EA refused to publish any games for Dreamcast period. EA *thinks* that their petulance had a role in bringing down the Dreamcast, and they think they're important enough to bring down the Wii U and Nintendo along with it.

if this is true then hmm ... no ps4 and nextbox for me most likely
