Forums - Politics - Chicago politicians want to make our minimum wage 10 dollars an hour!

Canada has been 10.25 for a couple years now. What is the wage in the US now?

I think this really only applies to teenagers. Anybody with any education with a job probably makes more then minimum.

I have three degrees and years of experience in stuff. I now make minimum wage. Thank Obama. Also I think its 8 something here. Actually I work nights so I make a dollar more.

Why 3 degrees? Thats like 9 years if your going by a 3 year program per degree.

Dont mean to pry, just curious.

Minimum wage varies from state to state for example it is 7.25 hear in Tennessee.

I do not think that this will go over well with many industries that employ sub $10.00/h employees, especially with the new spate of taxes from the healthcare law that is yet to come down (on top of the other numerous tax burdens such as SOX), and even if the raise went through, the average minimum wage worker would see that increase eaten up by higher taxes and higher inflation for everything important: food, fuel, rent etc.

In Alberta our minimum wage is $9.75 per hour, even McDonalds pays $11.92 an hour, and we have to import people from the Philippines to take these jobs because we have a massive labour shortage ...

People getting a decent wage has nothing to do with what the government sets the mimum wage to and everything to do with having an economy that is strong. Unfortunately, this simple concept is completely lost on those who always argue for a higher minimum wage; and they are always surprised to find out that the youth unemployment rate skyrockets in regions where they increase the minimum wage beyond what the market will support.

Bad idea, raising Min wage also raises the unemployment rate.

It's AU$15 here in Australia. And given that the Australian dollar is at or a little above parity with the US dollar...

It is better that those people don't make anything than that they should make less than $10/hour.

I think it's just under £6 here if you're over 21, so that comes out as about $7.50. So a big jump really.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
