Sony will have to work extremely hard to win America. i actually don't see it happening. I think a lot of people will stick with the 360 no matter what Sony brings to the party next gen. Unfortunately everything in the US is a popularity contest and Microsoft is the absolute best at making everyone believe they are the coolest.

As long as the Nextbox establishes itself as being the "cool" or "hip" console. Nothing Sony can offer will tear those people away.

I live in the US and I would absolutely love to see a Sony dominance here, I just don't see that happening. I look around and all I see are people who are loyal to the 360 simply because it's popular. Most of them stick to the same old arguments from early this gen (PS3 has no games). Most people I talk to still believe that to be true. Obviously it isn't but if they havn't figured that out by now they probably aren't all that into videogames. they just play a few, the big blockbusters that all their friends have.

I believe the "gamers" here have no interest in anything that isn't trendy atm. I'm fairly certain the fanbase that Microsoft has managed to amass this gen will easily transition to the Nextbox regardless of anything else.

If you live in the US, haven't you've already seen plenty of Sony's dominance over the past 2 console generations?  Sony has already had their time in the sun as the "cool" and "hip" videogame company in NA during the PS1+2 eras, just as SEGA did back in the 16-bit era.  Now it's M$'s time in the sun.

It is pretty funny though watching Sony fans lament the fact that the very things that worked in Sony's favor during the PS1+2 days like the "cool and hip" factor, trendy marketing (remember the Crash Bandicoot anti-Nintendo ads?), being the console of choice for "mature" gamers, huge 3rd party library etc, are now working against them and in favor of M$.

Now all of a sudden they pretend like none of those things matter, and all you hear Sony fans talk about is how they have the best 1st party exclusives and how Sony deserves to be the defacto leader of the videogame industry because they "care" so much about it since it's now the primary focus of the company.  Hmmm, now where have I heard all that before?  Oh right... sounds just like everything Nintendo fans were saying back during the N64/GC days, doesn't it?

No not at all because the "trendy" factor back then was so insigficant compared to the way it is now. The PS1/PS2 did well because they were great. The last two gens the most popular consoles were the ones that offered the most to gamers. The success Microsoft had this gen with the 360 is (IN MY OPINION) mostly due to the trendy/cool/hip factor NOT because they offered the most to gamers, THAT is the difference.

This gen has easily brought more nongamers/casuals into the market than previous gens and Microsoft gathered a ton of those people due to marketing and establishing itself as the "coolest" console.

Even if the PS4 would be successful it would be not enough. Sony is near bankruptcy, they even sold their headquarter in Tokyo(!), and I don' think that Vita or PS4 has a future.

PS4 have a bright future but the VIta doesn't seem to have one. Which is sad because I rather have it the other way around.

Really? You'd want PS4 go down the gurgler and Vita to flourish? Wow. To each their own I guess...

Having saiding that, it may not come to that. I disagree about the Vita not having a future. A price cut could do wonders, and the right games could still turn it into a beast in Japan, while titles like Killzone keep it alive (though probably not thriving) among the Sony loyals in NA/PAL.

So, just to be clear:

- When Sony wins it's because they deserve it, but when others win they don't.

- Casual gamers are second class citizens and don't deserve a say in which console is the most successful.

Sounds a bit elitist to me.

Won't happen.

Sony "couldn't keep" America with all the brand awareness they had with the PS2 when MS was still an infant. It's simply too late now. The Xbox brand is huge compared to what it was back before the X360 came to be. In fact, Sony's position in the market is actually worse now due to Nintendo taking over Japan and MS NA. Sony only really has Europe but the question is... Can Sony afford to fight 2 territory wars at once? They're not gonna win NA regardless but if they try too hard they might upset the Europeans and that means market share for MS if they play it right.

i laughed.

No they're not near bankruptcy, you should read a bit about their financials. The Tokyo building is not their headquarters and neither is it sold yet.

No. When a console wins because it offers the most experiences to actual gaming enthusiasts then it is deserving.

If people are only going to go with the popular choice simply because it is the popular choice (aka Sheep) and they don't actually have any passion for the hobby or games themselves, then why should they be able to say which console is the most successful? People who only play games every once in a while are still fully capable of looking into a system and what each one offers before they purchase it.

I'm not being an elitist and In addition to Sony I like Nintendo as well. The thread was discussing if Sony can win the US and I'm saying in my opinion I don't think they can because the 360 is the popular choice over here right now and I see that carrying into next gen.

That's where we differ I guess; to me, you can play Wii Sports and Kinect Adventures, or you can play Demon's Souls and Metroid, and either way, you get a vote on which console you think is the best. I'm just not a fan of the view that casual gamers are somehow lesser beings, just because they don't spend as much time gaming as you or I do.

Frankly, I'd say the "sheep" thing favoured the PS1 and PS2 as well. Many people bought them because they were the "cool" thing and their friends had one. I don't buy the idea that this pressure to conform and be "cool" is a new thing, or even that it's much stronger now than it was in the PS1 era. Every winning console would owe a lot of its success to this.

And sorry if my last post was rude.

No it's cool man. We all have different opinions and I would never state anything I said as absolute fact lol. I don't have anything against people who don't play as much as myself or others or anything. Some people are busy n stuff and that's totally fine. The problem I have is with the people who think "Oh, X is popular so therefore it must be the best and Y must suck".

Though I do disagree about the "coolness" thing being the same as it was last gen. I say it's much more prevalent this gen. Especially because online gaming took off this gen. It's a huge craze. It's one thing for someone to hear about how someone spent their night playing a certain game, and a completely different thing to hear about how someone spent their night playing a game with a bunch of people that you know. It creates this kind of social need to experience the same things so you don't feel left out.

I'm not saying I hate online gaming or that Playstation doesn't also use online features lol, just that I personally beleive that a great deal of the 360 fanbase is only interested in the console/gaming because of the "trendy" factor and most of them could honestly care less what Sony or Nintendo offer. As long as the Xbox brand is strong, they will transfer to the next Microsoft console without a second thought.

The territories lost in the last console war must be retaken, for the greater glory of Sony!

All homes harboring Xboxs shall the torched, and their owners hung in public by 360 controller cords.

The consoles and games themselves will be thrown into a giant landfill, and sealed with cement so that they may never see the sun again. The land shall then be salted, so that no living thing shall grow where the accursed filth rots.

All employees of Microsoft will be given a choice, to convert to the One True Gaming Corporation, or die.

Any who dare speak the name "Xbox" shall have their tongues cut out, and any who writes or type it shall have their fingers chopped off.

Praise be to Sony, and death to Microsoft!

You are a sad person, very sad.

Wow just wow!!! Hoe can one not see the humour in his post!! The Xbox must indeed be very strong with this one........

OT: maybe Sony wants to retake some of that lost marketshare back in the US. Let's see if this will help! Where did Nintendo announce the Wii U by the way?
