Forums - Gaming - PS4 announcement this month is bad news for both WiiU and Nextbox

The American media will lap up any new Xbox announcement considering the 360's dominance there at the moment, and we all know how US media hype eventually infiltrates the rest of the world, overshadowing everything else.

Still, it's good to see Sony not resting on their laurels but taking charge...if indeed Feb 20th is when they announce PS4. A few extra weeks/months of buzz definitely won't hurt.

I feel it's especially bad news for ps3 and all the hyped upcoming exclusives that are to be released this year.

lol @ "it won't attract as much attention as the next gen".

1) Wii U IS next gen.
2) About people being interested: Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Smash, Wind Waker HD and, probably, something about the new Zelda >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything Sony could show for PS4.

I'm sorry, but do expected games really attract much attention? Answer: No. What next-gen is always about, and what gets people excited is all the new things we'll see. New IPs, new tech, new features etc. As far as new IPs go, Sony always has them in spades. That's the reason it will attract more attention.

Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda and Mario Kart will all easily be bigger than any new (or current really) IP Sony either has planned or is working on. A new Zelda game announcement on the same day as a new Uncharted announcement will always leave people thinking about the Zelda one, or at least >85%. Regardless of how "new" they are. Arguably the only difference is from Watch Dogs and TLOU, though again they had a bit of buzz for a few weeks and then that was it. Be prepared for when the new Mario, Zelda etc. are actually shown, and then see the reaction.

The PS4 may attract more attention now, but so did the Vita. Because it was new and shiny, but Sony never followed it up and now the only mention it gets are "where did it go wrong?" really. Expect the PS4 to have a similar, but not as large, issue.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Dude this is Microsoft we are talking about. The hype kings. They will go into the new console unveiling with a budget far far higher then Sony. Sony will have their event and once it is surprise will turn into questions that need answering. Or even worse if it looks bad the internet will make memes out of it mocking it like last time. They will only steal the thunder if they get it right. Launching a new console in this era is a scary time.

I don't really hear any of the gaming community talking about the PS4, outside of the spec rumors, and that's only coming from the existing sony fanbase.

The truth of the matter is, consoles are getting as expensive as a a midrange PC with more power than the consoles. This is starting to chip away at the percentage of console owners. The Wii U/PS4/720 generation will see the console market shrink a bit, especially with game development costs rising so high that studios are living paycheck to paycheck.

At the end of the day, Sony fans will be happy no matter what the PS4 turns out to be, and MS and Nintendo fans will idly ignore it, while most of the casuals that enjoyed kinect, move, wii controls will shift or have shifted to iPads.

I can predict this - the console market shrinking and a lot more studios closing their doors, or switching over to an app market

I think the only console that won't receive countless doom threads is "The New Xbox".

What I meant was after when we actually see the new consoles instead of relying on rumours.
