Forums - Microsoft - Why the Surface isn't selling

http://www.dailytech.com/IPad+Market+Share+Falls+Slightly+Microsoft+Surface+Sales+Weak/article29792.htm

"
According to market research firm iSuppli, Microsoft Surface RT shipments into the channel for the fourth quarter were about 1.25 million, but sales out of the channel were only about 55-60 percent of that. This equals about 680,000-750,000 unit shipments, which is well below the 1 million mark.

The Surface with Windows RT has a lot stacked against it, such as a high return rate (iSuppli said that's mainly due to the steep learning curve of Windows 8), the fact that device makers aren't particularly interested in the OS and Microsoft failed to sell the device outside of its own kiosks (there are only a little over 60 of them in the U.S.) and online until mid-December."

Although this is bad imo, the returns issue should be solved once W8 becomes adopted more, so that's something

Because it doesn't have a logo of a nibbled apple on it.

I can only speak for myself, but it's way too expensive for something that doesn't even have the top level OS. I see no appeal in the RT version, especially at that price.

Edit:  Oh, and those commercials were awful.  They did zero to tell me why I should want one, other than that they make a clicking sound.  I imagine a lot of people thought, after watching them, "hey, that dancing was nifty, but did you catch what product they were trying to sell?"

i still wait for your first video game releated thread on vgc haha

its just pointless. its way to late and Win RT is so very basic compared to IOS or Android.
the situation will only get worse when the full Win8 tablets release that are supposedly what everyone wants (a full laptop in a tablet) which is why tablets where dead until re-invented by Apple.
long story short.. Ms really messed this up. The Resolution? Windows Surface RT tabs $250 and Win8 Surface $499 including the keyboard with both. that is the only way Ms will shift this dead product.

Way overpriced and from what i was told the Surface can only be bought online or in a Microsoft store.

This is just about bouncing iPods.

...But I agree. Those commercials really didn't say much about the product.

First of all, here is the IDC report - http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS23926713#.UQry86U701J

"just shy of 900,000 units"

So I don't know where you're getting 680-750K.

Also -

“Number two vendor Samsung experienced 263% year-on-year growth, shipping nearly 8 million combined Android and Windows 8 tablets during the quarter to grab 15.1% of the market, its same market share total from the previous quarter.”

This isnt just Android and Apple sales, with Microsoft sucking the big one with Surface. Windows 8 probably composes a noticeable number of Samsung and Asus tablets sold (10-20% would be my guess). Asus was Selling those RT Vevo Tabs all over the place as was Samsung with their Atom based and i5 x86 tablets.

900K is nothing to scoff at, especially since its a 500 dollar product with limited availability. It’s clear that Microsoft doesn’t want the Surface to sell at a loss but is using it to raise awareness for Windows 8. They probably make more off a Samsung Win 8 tablet license sold than selling the Surface themselves for 500 bucks.

If microsoft sold 2 million tablets last quarter through all OEMs which is likely if not too low (Oct 26 - Dec 31 cause Win 8 launched late) that is 0 - 2 million growth for Microsofts ecosystem.

Sounds pretty good if you ask me.

the iPod is a very well established product and i personally think that was Apple's best iPod commercial yet! it was fun and catchy. The surface ad is a mess. it looks like some weird cheesy thing from the 90's and explains nothing. i also dont get why Ms has spent like 1.5bil advrtising with that advert.. what a waste of money

You can't just assume another 1.1m like that. I doubt tablets other than the Surface sold at all. The major OEMs were extremely not on board with making or promoting them due to the $100 undercutting.

Do you think Surface will have legs? There is no hype or awareness any more compared to Q4. There is more availability, but it would have to overtake at least one of the top four to be considered improved, and I see no compelling reason that it should.
