Forums - Politics - Explain why racism is wrong...

Because there is no genetic basis for race.

http://harvardmagazine.com/2008/05/race-in-a-genetic-world-html

Therefore preconceived notions about races being born with superior or inferior traits is wrong.  Even when talking on average.

It's only the social constructs of race that cause these stereotypes to become self fufilling prophecies...  Someone told they have the ability to do well in math usually identifies with math then and studies that way.  Somebody who's told he's "people" are superior athletes puts greater focus towards being a superior athelte, and those who develop atheletes look for kids of that race, some consiously some unconsiously.

If you were to put children on and Island and let them be raised by researchers who were trained to present social stereotypes different from what they were... suddenly you'd see a bunch of athletic white people, black people who excelled at math more then the other races on the island etc.

Okay, so we should waste money on dumb people who wont excell in college or a job afterward?

how do you know that they wont get a job after?

Poor grades in high school and you think that individual can handle a college curriculum?

i certainly did, along with dozens of other people i know. see your basing intellegence on a school grades which are based on an old and outdated system of edjucation

Question for people outside of the US/ Canada -- is racism considered a really bad thing in your country and nearby ones?

I'd look at it this way. You wouldn't insult yourself. So anything that makes you feel bad/wrong. Shouldn't be done to anyone else.

I suppose that's fair. Abundance of schools and majors that could suit any individual's needs.

Now explain why a person who achieved poor grades in school deserves a scholarship.

Define "racism". I'm really not sure what qualifies.

If I say that people of African descent have black skin and that people of European origin have white skin, most people would not consider me racist. Even though I'm making generalizations about huge groups of people, there is apparently nothing wrong with this.

Now, just humor me for a second. I don't mean this at all, personally. Suppose there is objective evidence that suggests that the average person of African descent scores 20 IQ points lower on an IQ test than the average person of European descent, adjusted for different environmental factors and such. This kind of research can never be foolproof or conclusive of course, but we've got as close to hard evidence as we're gonna get. With this in mind, would it become alright to say that, on average, people with black skin are less intelligent than people with white skin?

Under the circumstances I presented, saying that Africans are black is as objectively true as saying that they are less smart. So, I guess my real question is, the validity of these claims aside, is it still racist to point out "inferiorities" in other races? Of course, the thing is, calling something "inferior" is a value judgement. That is very easy to condemn. On the other hand, by simply making the statement, "Black are, on average, not as smart whites," are you necessarily doing something wrong, even if it could somehow be proven that this is the truth?

“These are my principles; if you don’t like them, I have others.” – Groucho Marx

As soon as racism starts at a small scale(clothes) it will grow bigger(wealth),age ,skin color, will tear people apart and the result is anger, hate and isolation.
starting with"my country is the best" to "the people with my skin color are the best in my country" to"the people with mmy skin color,my religion are the the best"to"people with my skin color+religion+ethnicitie are the best in my country"

than you will have an excuse to kill and enslave people and results are
400years of enslaving million black people in America
700years of enslaving million white people by the turks
1400years enslaving dozens of millions black people by the muslims

millions of jews killed in concentration camps by nazis(most germans)
millions of russians and ukraines killed in gulags by communists(most jews(u dont believe?research)
millions of indians killed by europeans
millions of hindhus and bhuddists by muslim arabs(hindhukush)

all those things would never happen without racism,as racism kills your empathy towards other human beings and it is a tool for war and submission, just like loyalty (the perverted form of integrety)is used by the army to achieve the same effect.

I think that's proof enough why racism is not a good thing.
And at a certain point you will be a racists to almost all people-We call those mega racist people european royals, the us-elite,the jewish elite, the muslim elite. Most of them never marry people of a lower status, and even inzest is nothing unusual for them-to keep their blood clean.

A great old lady -jane elliot- has shown how easy it is to discriminate people .Even by the eye-color .
Watch her documentary blueyed, than you will not ask anymore

i did not once say that. i gave an example saying that if two people were up for a scholorship, one was poor the other was rich, give the scholorship to the poor guy instead of the rich one, that way you have two people recieving education instead of one because the rich kid can afford to pay

That's exactly what you said:

now your discriminating against the poor because they dont have the same means of edjucation to recieve high grades. even if lets say that that a poor kid and rich kid are going to the same school, the rich kid is getting higher grades. who should recieve the scholorship? definatly the poor kid. the rich kid has the money to recieve an edjucation, the poor kid doesnt. this way you have two people getting edjucated instead of one

You made it about means rather that merit. And that is with what I fundamentally disagree.
