Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo loses 21 dollars with every Wii U sold

They have a logic error as the deluxe model and base model will have different costs and thus different profit losses. But to stay with this general lump sum....

So, they are likely making money on most people.

I bought deluxe WiiU at a $21 loss.
I got NSMBU for free via a promotion with Old Navy. Probably no loss or profit for N as ON likely paid a discounted rate around the cost of the title as it was part of their marketing budget.
I bought ZombiU for $60.
I bought CODBLOPS2 for $60.
I bought a pro controller for $50.
I bought Skylanders for $60.
I bought Trine2 for $15.
I bought two nunchuks as replacements for broken stuff for $40.

So the only first party stuff I bought that made them any money was the controllers. That surely made up the loss on the console plus some already. Then the small amounts they make for the 3rd party games I purchased was simply profit all the way.

While I don't think I'm every customer, the greater majority had to at least purchase one extra game and a controller or two. I can't see there being too many who only bought the deluxe console and nothing else.

I wonder how much red ink Sony and Microsoft will play to pump the next gen consoles out and play chicken with this.  No way that Microsoft and Sony release anything with sufficient horsepower to differentiate themselves from the WiiU in a way that they aren't going to lose over $100 per console, not if Nintendo is doing what it is doing, or don't do the "$599" thing again.

This is why I'm a crappy Nintendo fan. I took 21 bucks from them.

Don't worry, you're still ok in their book. Nintendo makes a profit off your purchase If you buy 2 games with the Wii U.

Nintendo didn't say 2. They said more than. I'm pretty sure they never specified this.

This explains a crack in the Article's logic. Thanks for posting this.

(Though, like you said, not everyone is a game junkie like you. )

I guess now they are losing even more...

That's the retialer, not Nintendo.

Hey Ninty, I'm trying to do my part!  I might have cost you money when I bought "the U" (deluxe), but I also have purchased:

Blops2, ME3, NSMBU, Arkham City, Darksiders2, Trine2 and a Pro Controller

I'm not ashamed to admit that I think the Wii U is great.  Love the freakn thing.

Sorry but WTF the author got the Operation Loss and use it to get how much Wii U is losing money Nintendo.

FAIL!

Nintendo said the Wii U have impact in the operation loss and not that Wii U accounted per ALL operation loss.

Or are there somethin I didn't get?

Wouldn't it still affect Nintendo in a way? The MSRP isn't anywhere near being reached.

In this instance, no. The retialer paid a price per console. Nintendo has that money... its the same to them eitherway.

This is costco either doing their own promotion or simply clearing stock.
