lots of jrpgs appeared on the 360 early this gen and it did not go well

MS never really gave them the spotlight and 360 fans never rewarded them with sales

it took the Japanese some years until recently that they started getting out of their shell once again this time on the PS3

...and Atlus is absent.

Actually those early 360 games sold pretty good for jrpgs. According to vgchartz Vesperia,The last remnant, Lost odyssey, infinite undiscovery and blue dragon all sold alright. Their also alll over half a million on here. Dont know if thats right or not but its there. Im willing to say those game ive just mentined are better thana lot of the ps3 exclusives like disgea, Atelier Roronoa, cross edge and hyper demension(EWW). Though there are some great ones as well.

I have had a lot of fun with jrpgs this gen especially those earlier ones for the 360 I do think theres less available, but I wouldn't say theres a lack of great ones. No genre this gen or last just kept putting out top notch super good games in my opinion.

yea, the 360 jrpg library is still better than the ps3 jrpg library here in America

PS3 has been doing well to catch up lately with stuff like Ni No Kuni and the upcoming Tales Of Xillia but it's been a very long time coming

the absolute gems on 360 are Tales Of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey. Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Blue Dragon and Magna Carta are honorable mentions but Lost Odyssey and Vesperia is where it's at on the 360

and they DIDN'T sell pretty good for JRPGs of their stature. They sold pretty good FOR XBOX jrpgs

Ill agree wth the first bolded. The second bolded i dont though. Compare sales of some of those ps3 or ps2 exlcusive rpgs in sales and youll see theres not that big or any difference. The only rpgs that sold in the million on consoles last gen was FF, Dragon quest and Kingdom hearts and symphonia.

in the japanese market I'm talking about japan sales only

Edit: but onto the WW bit. How many commercials do you usually see for Jrpgs besides the Final Fantasies and the Kingdom Hearts? didn't M$ have to advertise those games more than anybody else would JUST to get the games at the level that they are right now in sales?

Agreed but there are some gems hidden in the Jrpg genre this gen if you know where to look. Still doesn't compare to the Ps2 days.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

There was definitely some quality but not a lot of quantity. While smaller developers were putting out a good number, you didn't see much from the big names which leads to this perspective.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

I'm probably biased but i think the PS1 and SNES were even better than the PS2 days anyways. The PS2 had loads of RPGs but i felt like both the SNES and PS1 had higher quality RPGs in general. I really don't like most of the RPGs this gen, but i did have a lot of fun with xenoblade and demon souls.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

ps1 vs ps2 JRPGs is very debateable and i dont blame anybody for choosing 1 over the other

ps1 and ps2 were both rpg heaven

I also liked Chrono Trigger, EarthBound and Super Mario RPG on the snes

It's a niche genre that had a boom and the bubble burst.

Really don't know how much more they spent than normal besides securing some exlcusives/timed exlcusives. japan only though sure I can agree with that. but worldwide different story.

i also feel like the MMORPG is causing a lot of damage to the RPG in general. I'm so dissapointed in final fantasy becoming an MMO twice now, and even DQ became an MMO this gen.

I'm talking about commercials in America

i remember seeing the American commercial for Vesperia. It used to be on youtube but i cant find it now for some reason

and isnt this the extended version of the American commercial for Lost Odyssey?
