^ tablets? This is a smartphone report not an overall mobile devices report. Apple still owns the tablet market by a large margin I believe.

Yep. iPad is still king there. However the Nexus 7 and 10, Kindle, and Samsung Note series is gaining every year. Not quite as quick as what happened in the phone arena, but that is largely due to prices being far more comparable.

I guess those crappy Android Tabelts for $79 at Goodwill must be helping......

They're not smartphones.

But yes eventually every phone under $100 will be Android.

Unless you count the iPhone 4S ($99)  or 4 ($50 or free).

An iPhone is not under $100. It is ~$500. Whether you pay that upfront or in carrier subsidy is up to you.

That's quite impressive. Shows that open platform is the way to go if you want to get market share.

If you want profits though...that's a different story. Talk to Google how much they have made on this huge Android success in terms of device sales revenue and store app sales.

Comparing the last financial reports:
Last quarter Apple made 30 billion revenue on iPhone alone (not counting ipad and mac revenue).
Google made "up to" 800 million revenue on Android. They don't give the exact number.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft made more money on Android than Google by licensing patents. I'm actually pretty sure they did.

If you're going to count the hardware revenue, then you should add in the revenue from all OEM partners... not just Google. Afterall, the biggest appeal to Android is the plethora of hardware choice.

For Google, it's all about world-domination.

Yes. If Apple or MS owned the share that Android does, Google would be losing billions in search, advertising and product revenue.

Since all phones are subsidized... who the hell looks at the full price? Common denominator is the contract price. I know exactly zero people, in person, who buy at full price. This is all coworkers, friends, family, etc... and probably over 95% of them have smartphones of all flavors (even one with WP). Hell even my sister with T-Mobile still sells her old iphone for like $200 to get the new one.. so even her's is kind of a subsidized price.

That would be an awesome comparison... Wish someone had that data.

Lets do some rough guesstimation math. 152 million devices at ~250 dollars per device price average VS 47 million devices at ~550 dollars average.

38000000000 vs 25850000000

Android Wins again! :)

Nice numbers.

In the long run "open" will always beat "closed".

It's like the PC vs MAC war all over again and we know how that turned out.

This is true but keep in mind that mobile revenue from search is pretty low at the moment. I work in online advertising and from the stats that I see, I can't imagine google making more than 1/10th on mobile compared to what makes on desktop for the same amount of impressions.

The mobile CPM's are low, their Adwords and Adsense advertising platforms don't really support mobile properly.

This may pay off in spades for them in about 5 years though.
