An iPhone is not under $100. It is ~$500. Whether you pay that upfront or in carrier subsidy is up to you.

Since all phones are subsidized... who the hell looks at the full price? Common denominator is the contract price. I know exactly zero people, in person, who buy at full price. This is all coworkers, friends, family, etc... and probably over 95% of them have smartphones of all flavors (even one with WP). Hell even my sister with T-Mobile still sells her old iphone for like $200 to get the new one.. so even her's is kind of a subsidized price.
