Hm...I was very cautious about live action idea for Zelda, but listening to that music in teaser...maybe they will go for retro look and feel of fantasy films from 80s, which would suit it, IMO, much better.

So excited! Glad they didn't decide to limit the appeal by doing an animated Zelda movie. Animated makes sense for Mario, but live action makes total sense for Zelda.

Make it the must watch epic fantasy movie of the year! I hope they don't limit themselves to a one-off either, could totally see a trilogy of Zelda movies over the next decade if it's done well. I just keep thinking of the impact LotR had, but Zelda! Anyway, this will for sure be one of the only movies I'll see in the theater this whole decade. Just don't make it cheesy lol, I want to see modern grand epic fantasy movie. This is no kids film, this should be a movie for everyone.

I hope the vibe will be similar to the 1985 movie 'Legend'

If they manage to pull off what first season of Stranger Things did, which was making a modern take on 80s movies like ET and Goonies, making it authentic both for people like myself who remember those exact 80s and for newer generations who have no connection to 80s, they will have instant classic.

Despite my love for the subject matter, I'm actually pretty bearish on the Zelda movie. A few reasons why:

  • Wes Ball is a competent director, but hardly an auteur
  • Nintendo is a very conservative company that doesn't want to risk any damage to its popular IPs, so I expect a safe, formulaic, middle-of-the-road production
  • The most recent Nintendo film production, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was poor
  • When, if ever, has there been a good live-action video game-to-film adaptation?

And one reason to be optimistic:

  • Ball has said he wants to create something like a "live-action Miyazaki"

In what way was the movie poor?

I absolutely loved it when I watched it at the theaters to the point I have bought it digitally.

I’m very glad you liked it. I found it to be sub-par, unfortunately.

For me, it was an overcorrection to the infamous 1993 movie, which, despite its many faults, was at least memorable and strange. This newest attempt, in comparison, feels very sterile, soulless, and designed by committee. When the movie actually dares to get weird — as it does with the delightful “Peaches” segment — it’s really quite good. For the most part, though, it just relies on safe, predictable plot beats, affable-but-underdeveloped characters, and way, way too much fan service. Every five minutes, it feels like the movie winks at the camera, saying “hey, remember this thing you love from your childhood?”

Also, there’s no there there. For 90 minutes the movie just sort of ricochets among set pieces, gags, and references, without much downtime to develop a character, expand upon a theme, or elaborate upon its world and mythology.

As for the voice work, it’s okay — completely competent and totally forgettable. Pratt is not nearly as bad as everyone feared, but also nothing special. A dozen voice actors could have done better with the material. Black is the highlight.

The best part of the movie is probably the animation, which is quite good, at least by Illumination’s standards. There’s a certain lazy, sugary blandness to that studio’s art that’s missing here. It seems like Nintendo inspired the animators to up their game.

I also thought the Mario movie was great actually.

As for the Zelda movie, I’m doubtful. It needs to have super high production values for it not to be super cheesy. High fantasy is a difficult genre, especially live-action, and there’s a fine between something good and something stupid like, say, Eragon or something.
