Forums - General - Need TV Purchase Advice

I am moving to a new house next week so i figured good time to perhaps buy a new tv.

What I am looking for:

- LED backlit

- 46 TO 55 INCH

- perfect for gaming

- great black levels

- 3d

Reading around the net it looks like the trend of manufacturing has moved to edge lit leds rather than full array leds. TBH i don't think I have seen on australian sites anythign that mentiond full array led.

There is also 120hz and 240hz and motion of 400-800hz lol.

Active 3d and the passive 3d lol.

Should i care about any of this stuff? how will it impact gaming, moves ans or sports.

You should wait a bit... most if the time the new TV lines are coming out around spring.. Samsung new line releases in March.. there also the posibilty that the old line goes into discount then.. so you could get a es8000 samsung cheaper when the f8000 series is released..

from what I read the Phillips pfl 9700 TVs (unfortunately I'm not sure if they are called the same in australia) are top class 2D and 3D full array LED-LCD TVs

but that's their top model line so it's pretty expensive

picture quality wise panasonic plasma TVs still seem to get the best ratings - they consume twice as much power as an LED-LCD, but usually are cheaper, so in the end both probably cost about the same after 5 or so years of usage

I saw a review giving the Panasonic TX-P50VT50 the best marks in both 2D and 3D quality (and a pretty bad mark in sound, but imo no flat TV can produce good sound, that's what I have my hifi system for).

As for active vs passive 3D, well both can work really really well, but passive 3D unfortunately has half the resolution per eye and even the best ones look interlaced in 3D mode, so personally I would only consider passive 3D in 4K TVs, as then you have atleast 1080 lines as opposed to measely 540 in the current TVs in 3D mode. If you are prone to headaches or eye strain with active shutterglasses then passive 3D might be the better choice though (and it's way less expensive to use that with several people at once as the passive glasses are dirt cheap).

Me personally all I need is a T.V with good sound and color with 1080p. Anything else isn't really necessary for gaming or watching blu ray movies. Unless you really feel like you can't live without 3D then you shouldn't really care about all the other specs. Just my opinion I'm sure some will disagree.

ok ill have a look, although panasonic is a dying bread in aus as we seem to get less models compared to other brands.

yer not too concerned about sound as will use hifi system.

plasma is not an option as electricity costs here are high lol.

I find it hard to believe that you're serious. everything you mentioned is in every TV now adays.

LG is supposed to be one of the best brands out there for TV's at the moment.
BestBuy's Top 3 go like this: LG, Sony, Sony. (That's with 3D and 1080p.) I would link you to the webpage but the link is really huge...
