Forums - Sony - Beyond: Two Souls engine development was an 'absurd' idea done out of passion, says David Cage

Quantic Dream head David Cage calls the development of an entirely new engine for the upcoming PlayStation 3 release Beyond: Two Souls "totally absurd," explaining the decision not to re-use the engine created for Heavy Rain does not make sense from a business standpoint and was instead made out of a passion for development.

Speaking to Shacknews, Cage refers to himself and the team behind Quantic Dream crazy as he emphasizes their lack of interest in money or celebrity.

"We're just crazy people. We don't do this for money or fame. We want to take risks because we enjoy trying to push the envelope," he said, referring to the studio's newly upgraded engine.

"Does it make sense from a company point of view? Not really, to be honest. Being the CEO of the company, I can tell you that it's totally absurd. But we enjoy it so much. We're a team of passionate people. This is 'what we should have done,' but we've done something else."

Beyond: Two Souls explores the life of a young woman with special abilities running from a government organization. The game's lead will be voiced by Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page, perhaps best known for her role in Juno.

That should be the main focus for every developer to be honest. I mean I understand at the end of the day they need to make money but if they create a game in hopes of just making a profit then I think it will ultimately fail. I have nothing but ther utmost respect for Cage. Not saying this cause he has developed exclusively for the PS3 recently because even if QD was multi-plat, I would still be a huge fan of his. It's hard not to like someone who creates video games because they are passionate about them, and not because they are driven by sales or profits.

Wow. So much respect for Mr. Cage. Luckily for him, they pushed the envelope AND sold well with Heavy Rain. Here's to hoping that Beyond can be commercially successful so they can move the industry forward and innovate even more.

More than Heavy Rain for sure. They are modelling the characters based on more famous actors this time.

Respect for DC.

But lets be honest. I love Sony 1st party, but they would not be able to do this, if HR was a commercial disaster. They can thank it for themselves, and the fairly large wallet of SCE

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Excited for 3eyond and Props for David Cage although sometimes I don't agree with him.
