IWesstern RPG can be good games, but most of them are forgettable. JRPG have that magic that stay in your head for years. The same thing happens with animes.

Good Japanese games will make it here, but the fans will have to ask for them.

This is only good if you are Japanese or a part of the niche that loves Japanese gameplay. The rest of the world would love to play games with that Japanese style, but they want the gameplay that the West polished. That means RPGs with action and shooting instead of random battles and turned based fighting. The rest of the world likes spiky haired teenagers saving the world from crystal wielding clowns as much as the Japanese, but unlike the Japanese the rest of the world doesn't want to grind for hours and days and weeks. The times have changed and the Japanese gameplay has competition that it didn't have during the rise of Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. The limitation of those early systems didn't allow for anything better, but now they are tropes and cliches and we deserve better. Japanese developers should most definitely give their games the style that makes them Japanese, but they need to learn how to make complex gameplay without relying on the 30+ year old turn based combat system. |
I don't care how long it's been around. That's like saying people should stop playing Chess because it's old. I get that you don't like turn based game-play and that's fine. But I do. A lot of people do. Are turn based games going to outsell Halo or Uncharted? Nuh uh, but I really don't give a rat's fuzzy rear-end. A LOT of games and genres don't sell millions of copies. If they don't get crazy with the CGI, they can still be profitable while pleasing lots of fans.

Random battles and turned-based fighting are niche? Only appeal to the populace of a small island?
Aw, now look, you've gone and upset him.

Random battles are central to the mechanic of pokemon though, you have to search to find them all, to really work for the 1 rare pokemon you really want.
What he is referring to is the grindfest of some JRPGs. I mean at least pokemon has repel. In JRPGs you usually enter the battle, then choose run. Repeat. Pokemon is guilty of this too, but they at least give us the option of not getting into a battle at all.

This entire conversation is so weird to me. Borderline racist, too. People who live in Japan have many different tastes and passions. Same as people in the Western hemisphere, which is pretty damn big. Sure, some games sell better in location X and some games sell better in location Y, but it's weird that we divine from that information such crazy stereotypes.
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!. Im glad it only 1 generation of failure to figure it out.

You mean like The Last Story or Xenoblade? |
Yes, exactly. I haven't played The Last Story yet, but Xeonoblade is a perfect example of Japanese style with modern gameplay.
