Forums - Gaming - What is the definition of hardcore games?!

The way I see it, a hardcore (or core) game is one where the player makes a significant investment into the game whether that be in the time it takes to play through (e.g. sandbox like GTA, Skyrim, most strategy games like Civilization or Starcraft), an emotional investment with the story/characters (e.g. RPGs like Dragon Age or Mass Effect) or in attempting to master the mechanics (God of War, Mario). They're essentially games that require the player to immerse themselves into one or more of these aspects to get the most out of it.

That's not to say a game can't be both casual and hardcore as games like GTA, CoD and Mario can be played casually or a player can invest and immerse themselves into the game. Bridge titles that balance both core and casual elements are what developers and publishers really strive for but rarely succeed in.

Yeah I gotta agree with this as well. But I guess for a core game to be considered casual depends on how the gamer plays it: playing Mario casually requires you to be a core gamer :p

Yeah, I can see how bridge titles must be hard to make... They gotta be easy to just pick up and play, and at the same time they gotta be able to give you a deep and immerive experience if that's what you're looking for...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I have never had a problem with a Mario game. So to me, Mario is Core. Zelda I have had plenty of problems in Dungeons. More Hard Core. For me.

Yeah, I just stumbled upon that insight as well while answering you and Scoobes: CoD is hardcore for me personally, while Zelda and Mario is more Core...

Theres no such thing as a hardcore game, but rather a AAA game. Those games are high budget games designed to capture the attention of the  hobbyist gamer.

P.S.

If there was such a thing as a hardcore game, its probably a game that is designed to catch the attention of the hardcore gamer. Hardcore gamer= Hardcore game.

ZombiU survival mode is as hardcore as it gets, its virtually impossible to beat. And those that have must have sunk endless hours into the game, and memorised the hell out of it.

Imo a hardcore gamer is someone who takes gaming to the "next level", it becomes his or her most important hobby. A core gamer takes interest in gaming news, posting on forums about the subject, go to conventions, etc. All of those things combine make it a core gamer, whether the person plays Mario, GoW, CoD or Angry Birds doesn't matter.

To most 10-13 year old males, the most important thing is that they appear like they're badasses, so they stick the word "hardcore" in front of everything that they can think of that they do, which includes the games they play, typically games that are shallow with lots of blood. 10-13 year olds typically, but also 20-50 year old males who have the awkward social standards and maturity of 10-13 and so are just figuring out how to be badass tweenagers during what should be their adult life.

There isn't actually a such genre as "hardcore game"

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Theres no genre, but rather games created for the audience who already understand games and want games tailored to the hobbyist games, featuring elaborate stories to games that present a challenge. Hardcore games= Games not  intentionally made for the casual audience.

With Wii dead and Wii U on the rise, I think the whole "hardcore games" debate will be dead, soon.
