Forums - Sony - Sony sells New York HQ for $1.1 billion, up 19% in 2 days

I am selling my house to restructure my budget. I am in great shape financially since I don't have the burden of owning a house and all that.

If this is the cheapest way to get the money they desperately need, then go for it. You can't do it more than once though.

The market isn't responding to the building sale. It is responding to the CEO statement of yesterday.

Anyway, I expected a profit this quarter anyway, and this has assured a profit for the next quarter I guess.

We'll have to look beyond this transaction to see what's going on in the numbers.

i don't think the market is responding just to this statement (did it even deliver numbers?) in that extreme way. i think it is three things:

- that statement

- selling the building with profit

- the third thing is:

japans new government plans a money flood. markets already react to that. NIKKEI is up today ~3 percent. the last two month it were 25 percent.

Nikon up 5.8 percent today. panasonic up 5.3 percent today. and as we know sony is in financial trouble and has to pay high for debt, i think sony profits the most from cheap money (better said the hope for cheap money which will come in some weeks?).

I find it rather ironic that a right leaning govt is planning to go on a spending spree. But I guess Nationalism + desire for power > ideologic economic consistency.

But Japan's consumer electronics giants need the world to start buying their stuff to get out of the pooh. Japan govt corporate welfare ain't gonna cut it.

in fact, nearly all big economies do this now. America prints money, the EU gives unlimited credit to banks, which is printing money. Japan will do this too. that's not because of nationalism, that's because getting a economy to run is more important than consistency in weak times.

they also want the money to be used to rebuild the area around fukushima. infrastructure was always a good plan to invest in in bad times.

Japan has a horrible time right now, and i don't think this move is a bad one.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

This is not such a big deal. Businesses sell there assets like buildings and factories all the time.

Restructuring (or as some analyst say - streamlining) was always going to happen and Sony had promised to do this a long time ago. Sony are a big company with their hands in very many pies. It was always going to take time to sort out the mess they find themselves in.

Everyone agreed that they had to shift a lot of "dead weight" to get their heads above water and start swimming again.

There is a whole lot more selling to come to achieve this. I think it's only started.

That billion will help the upcoming beast known as the PS4 when its down.

sony have other building up for sale and fired ten thousand work force so not good new either

Like I said that's a good news and every other company did the same thing when as is in restructuring... Sony wants to get on track again.

Doing nothing is bad news.

Kaz is doing the right thing, the economy all around the world is pretty crap right now, they have a new console coming, and so need to be moving the company in the right direction in terms of profitability. I dont see this as a fire sale, more of a sensible restructuring that Kaz was brought in to do. Anyone suggesting they continue on the same path they were on, well is a bit silly.

They are still holding onto TV's but apparently not getting into a budget war. It will be interesting to see if that dept has improved over the last 12 months as that is the one causing them most problems i believe.

Agreed. Sony must sell to live or don't and die.  I see it as simple as that.
