releasing a whole new console doesn't lead to fragmentation?

No, because everyone who purchases the new console by definition owns the peripheral out of the box.

I see what you're getting at, and there is some logic to it, but in the end, for reasons valid or not, adding something major and new in the form of a peripheral is less likely to lead to long-term success than simply making it standard on the new console.

Just look at WM+ if you want proof. Nintendo tried hard, but was still unable to replace the original WiiMotes by this one. I think that even the Wii U is still compatible with regular WiiMotes, which I find a very bad choice. They should just dump them and make only WM+ controllers compatible, this way 3rd parties would start making games that take advantage of the precise controls, which was a huge problem on the Wii.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

well it does in the sense that not everyone who owned the original console will necessarily upgrade to its predecessor

it may be less likely to bring about success but for this context imo it seems more sensible when when you consider additional costs like marketing, R&D etc that are required with launching a new console

why not forego all of that if the next console won't be that much different

Well, I heard from reliable insider that NextBox will have 1280 GCN2 shaders in its APU and in addition Virtex-7 FPGA to assist with sparse voxel octree raycasting.

/end random rumour

virtex7-fpga? and people complain developing for ps3 was hard ;)

If these specs are true, it will be interesting to see what M$ and Sony would use at the selling point of their new hardware. Those specs aren't going to provide a huge jump...

Based on numbers alone? Sure. You vastly underestimate the effect architecture can have on performance, though.

The BuShA owns all!
