well it does in the sense that not everyone who owned the original console will necessarily upgrade to its predecessor
it may be less likely to bring about success but for this context imo it seems more sensible when when you consider additional costs like marketing, R&D etc that are required with launching a new console
why not forego all of that if the next console won't be that much different
