Is there really so much hate out there for the Gamepad?  That is the whole reason I am excited about the Wii U.  What is there to hate?  At its core, it is still a traditional controller.

I wouldn't say there's hate, just indifference. For people who don't like the traditional dual-analogue controller (i.e. the folks who the vast masses whom the Wiimote was meant to attract) the Gamepad contains all the same defects as those complex controllers, while for people who are skeptical about playing substantial games on tablets the Gamepad is equally unattractive for appearing to basically be a tablet.

I see the Gamepad as something of a platypus: it's got a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and ultimately it looks kind of ungainly. Not to say that it is in practice, mind you, but you only get one shot at making a first impression (see: 3D in the 3DS).

The reason why the Wii dive bombed was because Nintendo stopped supporting it.  The moved onto 3DS and Wii U support.

I agree with this assertion. Although it's a bit surprising just how few 3DS/Wii U titles they have released so far, in light of how quickly they largely abandoned the Wii! They've developed and released, what, 20 3DS games to date? And only two Wii U titles released, with about three of four internally-developed games known to the public.

Current smartphone sales have eclipsed dedicated hardware by literally hundreds of millions. I wonder what the ratio of smartphone sales to nintendo 3DS is. Probably 500/1.

I'd insert a snarky comment to this, but the flaws in its logic basically mock itself.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that the 3DS is not doing bad? It's sold more units in 2 years than any other console in history, how can that be bad. As for the Wii U there is only one game out worth buying ,and people aren't willing to pay 360$-410$ for one game.

Finally people are accepting the fact that nintendo isn't doing well. It only took 1.5 months to understand this?

I wonder how long nintendo can hold onto their dedicated handheld though. Current smartphone sales have eclipsed dedicated hardware by literally hundreds of millions. I wonder what the ratio of smartphone sales to nintendo 3DS is. Probably 500/1.

I wonder what are the ratio of PC sales to Home Console sales. Probably 500/1.

Thanks for bringing up how no one is buying a Home Console because of PCs argument again.

But I prefer to look at the sales of these systems to disprove you:

PS2

GBA

Wii

DS

Wii U

3DS

these are the 6 best selling video game systems of all time, with the 3DS at the #1 spot, for THE BEST. (look at current, same point in life-spam sells and compare them)

Problem with the 3DS right now isn't the hardware but software price. Hardware is selling fine but software numbers are still pretty low. Nintendo needs to realize that with so many free games available on smartphones and tablet people aren't going to pay $40 except for the top notch titles.

In addition to that Nintendo has become a formulaic company, they think they just need to stick a gimmick with each game console/potable and call it a day. And no new franchises since Pikmin (that is before Iwata took over). Wii Sports, Nintendogs, Brain Age, etc don't count, as the 3DS proved (with Nintendogs and Brain Age), those super casual titles don't sell beyond their fads.

And seriously, who thought the Wii U could succeed anyways? Too expensive for the casual, it was clear the gamepad wasn't attractive enough, too underpowered to attract the enthusiast. Unless they can pull off a major hit like Wii Fit was last generation, I don't see this thing selling beyond GC levels, at least in the West. In fact I don't think it would be a major hit even if it was priced at $200, with 140 mil PS360 consoles already sold, who but the most dedicated of us Nintendo fans would care.

And I will keep saying this, Nintendo needs a big change in management. They need new blood more in touch with modern times.

The 3DS games cost $15 to $40 here in the U.S. you can get a new copy of such games as Tetris Axis & many others for $15, including at GameStop.

Other 3DS games are $20 & $30 with some at $25 & $35 as well.

And the GameCube Life Time sales in America is 1.2 Million VS. the 3DS current 8 Million.

And Nintendo has a lot of a new Franchises:

Dillon's Rolling Western

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword

Pilotwings Resort

Steel Diver

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Savvy Style

Ketzal's Corridors

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir

Pushmo

Crashmo (New IP, but Pushmo franchise)

And probably others too.

So thanks for being the uninformed gamer you are.

FYI the Wii U games since launch cost $30 to $60 depending on the game, for a new copy of one.

And the Wii U has better sells then the PS2, and will continue to do so at worst case scenario, being only beaten by Wii sells, as already shown. (for Home Console sales)

And the PS3 & 360 has a 256 MB RAM (with less then 200 MB for games)

The Wii U has a 2 GB RAM, which means it has a 8 times more powerful RAM then the PS3 & 360.

Threads like these are becoming tiresome. Their will always be a market for gaming first of all. And second of all 3DS is doing great. The Wii U ain't doing to hot, but once the software starts coming it'll catch on.

Yup, pretty much this ^^ And it's not as if it's selling BADLY either. It's selling fine in the States and Japan, just not so well in Europe...but even there it's still not anywhere near panic stations. Outselling the PS3 and 360 at launch and selling around 80% of the Wii's launch sales is pretty impressive in my book, especially when you consider that we're in the middle of the worst worldwide recession we've seen in donkeys years.

Yep. I concur and why I stopped replying.

Meh. Sony's still around and kicking, despite a terrible PS3 launch, a bland PSP launch and a Vita crash and burn. These companies survive because they know how to make adjustments. None of them threw money at bad money. Nintendo will be fine, they just rushed to the party before even they were fully dressed. They'll get their stride back.

As for the OP, regarding smartphones/android, a fairly small percentage of people are actually doing any gaming on these devices, and if they are, even a smaller percentage are willing to buy "paid" games. We don't really need the KFC Biscuit bowl of entertainment. 4G is still barely available in most areas,  and streaming movies on 3G is as painful as horse sex. Most people are using basic (non-game) apps. Until the wireless/cell data infrastructure is greatly improved, we have at LEAST 2 more generations of gaming before these suggestions are relevant.

I still find it interesting to see people labelling the 3DS as a failure. It's consistently the top selling
console each week and is wiping the floor with the Vita.... Sony would love to have a "failure" like this!
