I wouldn't say there's hate, just indifference. For people who don't like the traditional dual-analogue controller (i.e. the folks who the vast masses whom the Wiimote was meant to attract) the Gamepad contains all the same defects as those complex controllers, while for people who are skeptical about playing substantial games on tablets the Gamepad is equally unattractive for appearing to basically be a tablet.
I see the Gamepad as something of a platypus: it's got a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and ultimately it looks kind of ungainly. Not to say that it is in practice, mind you, but you only get one shot at making a first impression (see: 3D in the 3DS).
