This thread is hilarious.

Hahaha, well, sound waves gave me laughs as he thinks he is stating absolutes and facts. Though he manages to be funnier than most who do this.

Ot: My tablet is my main gaming platform until February. I am a total casual, all I play is angry birds, bad piggies, final fantasies, and borderlands 2.

End of the world shiznit if you ask me.

I doubt Nintendo will want to drop one of their biggest spending crowds so quickly. They are going to try their hardest to keep the Casuals with them.

Im with the OP, yes it is selfish but I dont care. Rather see a shelf with a little bit of games that are actually worth a damn, than a bunch of Bachelor, Just Dance knockoffs and the shovelware that invaded the Wii, it boggles my mind how some people here are trying to downplay that whole aspect.

When I used to complain about the crap games coming out for the Wii years ago on this forum I was deemed a Wii hater (even though I owned the system twice) and was told that the PS2 was also full of crappy games (which every system has, but the Wii was on a whole other level of shovelware).

When I complained about casual gamers making the Wii into a casuals' console, I was told there would still be the big Nintendo first party games (which was true) and that these casuals would turn into gamers over time (the bulk of them did not as apparent by the sales of Zelda and other core games and the mild launch of the Wii U).

I disagree.  Facts are the games industry is larger than ever and more people are playing than ever before.  Wii absolutely turned non-gamers into gamers.  Just not into 'core' gamers.   Wii's audience is still playing games from Just Dance 4 to Angry Birds.   Tablets/Smartphones and to a much lesser extent Kinect, still enjoy, and thrive on, the the fruits of Nintendo's efforts.

I agree with this, I meant core gamers that play Zelda or Monster Hunter type games.

What I hope for the Wii U is not exactly big hw numbers, but a more active userbase with more games at a better schedule.

My opinion is the opposite.

Screw the hardcore. They didn't appreciate the awesome N64 and Dreamcast. They deserve an industry where every console is aimed for the mainstream.

Screw the hardcore? The N64 sold very well because of the hardcore, but Nintendo became a secondary console to the Playstation. The Dreamcast was Segas own fault, lets not get into this again. Sega fell behind, even their published games are behind.

Your view on Sega's history is narrow and biased. That's all I can say from our previous discussion. (EDIT, by that I mean that you woldn't accept the big picture, that the Playstations really hurt Sega)

The self-proclaimed "hardcore" didn't win the N64 the console war, so screw them.

Dude...I loved sega, but anyone who has looked up the history of Sega can tell that they were not sabotage, but had internal issues and issues with catching up that caused their demise.

The Wii U is in a bit of a rough patch, I don't really know who it's marketed towards. It has a very complex controller, but it launched missing a lot of online features, and no first party games for the core. I have some predictions for it though.

Like the 3DS, the low sales will have Nintendo freaking, they will start production on a whole bunch of Mario, rush these games to market, and do a severe price cut. Problem is, I don't think this will do that much this time, and Nintendo will finally realize that they need to actually make games for core gamers.

Comparing tablets to the U is meaningful because they both compete for a sale. If someone believes that they can get the same enjoyment out of a tablet as they can the U, then Nintendo has a problem.

As for core games, I am all for them but are the casuals that fickle? I mean Just Dance is enjoying a pretty solid and reliable trend over its iterations, and upward curve if I may add. I can't say the same about Mario and Zelda. By the way, Skyward Sword sold less because it was a Zelda on the same platform as its predecessor, there's a pattern for that (see OoT and MM).

Lastly, if Microsoft was able to successfully tap into the casual market, it must mean that there's some kind of formula for success there.

Ultimately, the solution to the challenges Nintendo are currently facing is not "Ditch the casual", but rather "Let's not stop making games that attract the casual, and games that attract the core, and let's offer better prices, because the market is getting much more competitive". Simple stuff.

I'd honestly Nintendo revisit the idea of creating an animation studio that they were thinking about prior to the Wii launching.

Maybe an animation studio could create a new character property which Nintendo could then use in games and benefit from if they need another revenue source

That's actually not such a stupid idea! They could come up with new IP's and strengthen their old like Mario and Zelda or Pokémon by making series out of them...

Regardless of the plethora of casual games on a Nintendo system, the Wii, DS and WiiU are all worthy of the hardcore purchase because of its hardcore content. Seriously if you claim to be hardcore, you'll see through the casual offerings to at least appreciate the hardcore games on Nintendo systems even if they don't personally appeal to you.

Exactly. Nintendo has recently been supporting the casuals but it isn't like they abandoned us, like many people think. The Wii and DS had some great Hardcore titles mixed in with the fun casual ones.

We'll just have to wait and see what the Wii U offers up.

I fail to see how the Wii were any less hardcore than the GC... If anything, the Wii proved that you can cater to both the casuals AND the hardcore. All I can agree with is that Nintendo should strive to get the same 3rd party support as Sony and MS... But the Wii was NOT a bad system, and didn't in fact neglect the hardcore gamers.
