That's exactly why I prefer blu-ray over dvd. Dvds look too clean, they usually have too much DNR going and simply don't have the required bitrate to bring out the film grain. Plus they still have the 3:2 pulldown conversion which looks even worse in 480p next to VHS's interlaced picture.
Some blu-rays suffer from dnr too, but there are good review sites to avoid those. Pretty much all blu-rays are in 24 fps, and most retain the original film grain for that beautiful filmy look.
My next movie is a good example of blu-ray conversion done right. All the warmth of the cinema print is retained. It's an epic about a little boy growing up, the last of his kind.
