Retro Studios deserves to be on there. As for IS or MS, let's face it Paper Mario SS wasn't that good at all, and Fire Emblem isn't visually stunning gameplay wise. Monolith soft made 1 good game in the past few years, Xenoblade; this one needs time to be judged.

Intelligent Systems has made more than just Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

I believe the criteria was current games and future potential.

I don't know because the OP doesn't have the criteria posted but I thought it was of all time.

I've never understood why Nintendo EAD is branded as a single developer. Makes little sense to me.

In all fairness, EDGE had this to say about the list:

"We're interested in technical and creative ability, and in studios that realise the most involving and stimulating game worlds, whether that's through visual, audio or game design. Imagination to bring new influences and themes to games, experiment with new ways of interacting, ingenuity in creating enthralling experiences, understand and engage with their audiences and have the vision to know where games are going next."

I still don't think Mojang should be in the Top 3 based on what they said. Top 5 is good enough.

Trust me I don't get Mojang up there either.

Because it would be very hard to sift EAD into individual parts outside of that. Yes, there are the 5 EAD groups (1-4 and Tokyo), but personnell often shift between them to the point that they are better judged as a cohesive whole.

Other developers with multi-project capability are also listed on here. Platinum Games, for one

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Maybe EDGE knows something we don't about Scrolls (Mojang's next game).

Which is why companies with past glories are excluded (like Square Enix or Rareware).

Then Valve shouldn't be on this list either since DOTA, Team Fortress and Portal 2 are not really innovative and do not push any boundaries. Same goes for Bungie (past glories) and Riot games (milking their one big game, which isn't innovative at all).

DOTA 2 is really popular and is shaping the e-sport world (same thing for League of Legends for Riot games).

Valve keeps on releasing new amazing game and hasn't made a major mistake as a developer. The role Steam has on the increasing popularity of digital media and indie titles is noticable.

Bungie is working on something that looks great so far. They're still actual.

It's too obvious that this list would be bad. Lists like this always get scolded, so I try not to pay attention to them or comment on them, but wow goodness gracious me! Mojang at #2?! That's a seriously embarrassing choice on their part. Mohjang shouldn't even be on the list if they wanted to pay respect to the industry.

Rockstar should be #1
