I don't see 4k TV's becoming a standard for a very long time. Sure the PS4 could support it but very few people are going to use it, especially considering 4k TV's are like $20,000+ atm.

That's why PSN/XBLM (as well as HD collections) games rule. They're almost always in 1080p.

Many disc-based games are actually rendered in sub-720p resolutions, then upscaled. It's a shame really, especially for those who notice this easily.

yes 4K certainly wont be the standard any time soon. but maybe in 7 or 8 years it will be. you never know

I don't make long term bets or quote peoples wrong predictions, its unlikely I remember this thread next year let alone in 5 or 10 years.

Funny you mentioned 3D. My mother wants a big television and asked me to pick one. And no 3D isn't even an option for new TVs if its supposed to be a 2012 model.

Its just starting to become unavoidable for 32 inch+.

The reason is that once a plant produces a certain panel it makes no financial sense to downgrade again so we will get them as standard which is obvious if we look at the development of 3D. No one wanted it but they are still buying it because they have to. You can still choose to buy a Smart TV but you can not buy a cheaper non 3D model in all cases I have checked lately. And this is going to be even more obvious in the coming years.

But 4k is another thing people will see the improvment right away and the trends are going to higher resolutions just look at the retina Apple Notebook. All Notebooks will have retina displays sooner or later and for 15 inch that would be 4k. PC profits massively from 4k and people will buy 26-32 inch 4k Monitors soon enough. Prices for the Panels will go down and 4k TVs start to become affordable and after that it will become standard. Cinema 3D with passive glasses will finaly be able to deliever 1080p per eye at a 4k resolution. Bigger TVs will look clearly superior in 4k and yes people start to buy bigger and bigger TVs. 30 inch was massive in the 90s now its a small size. Mid range is 42-60, big is 60-70 and massive is 80+.  

And yeah 3D is not dead if what I see in my life is any indication. Many people who disliked 3D with the bulky, loud, expensive and dark glasses seem to be perfectly fine with passive 3D and even the headaches seem to be not occuring.

Even if you believe technology stops moving because people are fine with what they have. It will not happen because our economy relies on creating needs and satisfying them. When the market reaches a certain point they create new needs. And this trend works aslong there is no technological roadblock or a flawed execution.

What do you think will happen when the technology development slows down ? There will be no need to buy TVs anymore after 6 years. Electronics like no other industry needs technological improvments to survive. 4k TVs/Displays need better GPUs/Ram, new physical media, better faster Internet, new phones, bigger/faster harddrives, better Cameras, better phones, new standards, new cables. The Movies should upgrade their resolution too, its actually a pretty blurry experience when you think about it. 

4k comes, this industry NEEDS 4k to survive/expand. 1080p is about to become standard for every device there is, its logical that they have to progress in some direction. 120hz refreshrate for TV is soon to be standard due to 3D and now what ? 4k unlike 3D will give the whole industry a new way to invest their time in for years to come, until they find something bigger like Holo 3D TVs (which appearently need 300 times more resolution to work properly). Consumer acceptance will speed up or slow down 4k, but its unstoppable. Its really necessary to buy 4k if we don't want to risk a possible financial crisis in Asia infecting Europe and America. 

4k does actually change image quality alot even on smaller displays so its not like its pointless to pursue 4k. The retina display on the apple looks stunning and TVs should look like that too. 

You will buy 4k I will buy 4k and soon everybody has it. Give it a decade until 1080p Tvs become a rarity, 8k is also not too far away.

4K could be the new 720P and 8K could be the new 1080P. I'll be skipping 4K altogether, until 8K becomes affordable. Till then i'll stick with 1080P.

8K? i dont think we will ever reach that i dont see the need, i dont think our eyes will see the difference TBH

Depends for what kind of display. If it's for a 32 inch monitor for your PC, 4K brings the pixel density to 145 ppi. Which is half the one found on the Retina Display iPad. It's only with 8K resolution that we approach the pixel density of the RD on a 32" screen, bringing it to 275 ppi.

Depending on your usage, such a high pixel density can have its benefits.

did not know that lol. but i guess we first need to even run games at 4k before talking about 8k

even smartphones will go 4k someday, today we see 1080P phones, it is just a matter of time. between 5-10 years later 4k tvs will become standard.

smartphones going 4K is insane and stupid. we wont be able to see the difference. 720p is more the enough in my opinion. more than that will just consum battery life and more CPU power
