Forums - Gaming - Is anybody else losing faith in console gaming right now?

Hell no. This year will be/is one of the most exciting in a long long time - we will have new consoles. We have awesome games coming out - multiplat AND exclusive (looking at the ps3 here).

Whats with the whining? If you are not excited with all that is or will be happening this year, then you arent that much of a console gamer.

Bit harsh wow! I also play non broken games!!

I apologize. That game just pissed me off that bad. Expected better from SnowBlind studios.

It's an amazing game but yeah - it contains game breaking glitches and bugs. Sad, because its an amazing game.

Not really. I think the OP just hated the way the Wii turned out? Personally I LOVE that Ninty is getting away from that mainstream thing and back to making more N64/GC stuff. So what if they wont make as much money? Last i checked no one here is on their payroll and you cant play sales, unless you are truly a console warrior and you care more about sales than actual games and if so I feel bad for whoever. I'm just going to keep it brutal, most of those mainstream games that were made popular on Wii...IMHO sucked anyway and just led to shovelware after shovelware after shovelware. I wouldnt mind if I never see Fabio's Caridio, you think you can dance or whatever crap was littering the shelves in the Wii section. So I look forward to what will be in the WIi U section.

MS, dont have 360 not gonna comment, but most of the games i play are on that system so I guess it must be good.

Sony, im actually behind on my games i need to play just on PS3, if you think they just make "interactive movies" then that is your ignorance.

2013 looks to be a really exciting year, and I'm far from done with the games I bought in 2012. Still haven't even started a couple. Our 3 year old loves the WiiU. Playing Mario together is great, he gets the game pad screwing us up with random platforms everywhere. He's laughing at us trying to get through his obstacle course, great fun.

Console gaming is cheaper then ever. Get PS+ and you already have plenty to play each month. PSN and XBL both have great selections of affordable games. The 2nd hand market is booming, there's lots of platinum and goty discounted editions around by now, and if you don't think you're going to play that brand new $60 game anymore you can always trade it in for half price or more within the first month. I can't play new releases on Steam for $17. That's what I ended up paying for the console version of AC3.

Microsoft has shown they were never really competent with hardware with the unacceptable rate of RROD. Sure that was mostly rectified with the newer model, but it should have never been an issue in the first place. This has caused me to lose much trust in MS, at least in the hardware department.

The RROD was caused by the EPA's new lead solder laws. MS had designed the Xbox 360 to handle the heat it generated, but the EPA changed the law and no longer allowed lead solder. MS had no choice but replace the solder with lead free solder that can't handle the heat as well. They ran tests under normal gaming conditions and found that the lead free solder worked so they shipped the Xbox 360. But the lead free solder turned out to degrade over time as it was heated up and cooled over and over. It would develope tiny cracks that MS had no way to know it would happen. Those tiny cracks are what caused the RROD. MS solved the situation by extending the standard warrenty for three years and releasing revisions untill they completely fixed the issue with the Xbox 360 Slim.

MS got screwed over by new laws yet handled it very well. If anything it should give you reason to trust MS. When the PS3 fats got the yellow light of death for the exact same solder reason, Sony didn't extented their warrenty and replace busted PS3 fats for free.

So, did Microsoft lobby to enable the use of lead solder, or are their 360s overheating still and we don't know about it?

It is always nice to blame corporate incompetency on government regulations.  People can try that to, blaming their being late to work on traffic lights.  Nice to know you believe that lead in solder should be mandatory, and that business demands REQUIRE Microsoft and Sony put out game consoles.  Funny how Nintendo didn't run into the same problems, and they ended up selling the most.

Hold on there buddy. You completely missinterpreted what I said.

Rather than explain it all again I'll just reply to your commends.

"So, did Microsoft lobby to enable the use of lead solde." - No, MS used new tech to reduce heat that would not harm lead solder.

"are their 360s overheating still and we don't know about it?" - Maybe, but not in the numbers that the original that was designed for lead solder over heated.

"It is always nice to blame corporate incompetency on government regulations." - Not blame, just giving the full story. MS designed using lead. The Government changed the law and MS had to either go with lead free or completely rebuild from the the ground up. They tested the lead free solder and it worked. They didn't know it would degrade over time from heating and cooling over and over.

"Nice to know you believe that lead in solder should be mandatory" -  No I don't and I didn't say that.

"that business demands REQUIRE Microsoft and Sony put out game consoles." MS and Sony did need to put out consoles. They didn't have time to redesign the entire mainboard and they didn't believe they needed to. But they did need to compete with eachother. Neither could afford to fall behind. They thought the had the lead free solder under control. But both  the original 360 and PS3 solder degraded over time. They could not have known that. Both redesigned and released "Slim" models that solved the issue thanks to new tech and methods.

"Funny how Nintendo didn't run into the same problems, and they ended up selling the most." Nintendo built the Wii on old tech that didn't generate the heat that the HD consoles did. Yes, Wii sold a ton, but it couldn't play Mass Effect 1,2,3, Gears of Ware 1,2,3, Halo 3,4, Uncharted 1,2,3, and all the other big HD games.

The short here is, when you are a company as large as Microsoft or Sony, it is your job to know the problems that can develop, and prevent them. If you don't know the solder in question would cause problems, it is your incompetency, not others. And no one is holding a gun to the head of Microsoft or Sony to tell them to be in the videogame console business.

The reality is that the RROD was caused by an incompetent response to the new EPA lead-free solder laws. The way you said is that it was CAUSED by the laws, when in fact, the laws don't build the videogame systems.

Lol what a mess. No wonder you feel bad about console gaming you don't own the best one out there, fix that asap

No. But I do go thru certain periods where I do 't wanna play. Then some moment where I play a lot and so on...

having just played the wii u for the first time, I gotta say definitely not losing the faith! awesomeness!
