#1 Don't mind the quote, just want to have it for future references.

OT: Sony just used a Phoenix Down on Vita :)

#2 I'm the only one that thinks that WiiU drop was smaller than expected?

3DS pulling big numbers, let's see how this year turns out.

MC stills tracks the PS2.

#1 It's ok... I BELIEVE!!!

#2 I think so... this week is always huge for Japan... it's expected a boost in consoles sales and not drop.

#3 928 units even after the end of production... amazing... more than DS.

Now would be a good time for a Nintendo Direct detailing a few Wii U games for Q2-4 this year...

Aren't there only 3 games with release dates in Q1 for Japan.  I'm not sure if they can wait until later this year.

Dont worry, they have bayonetta 2, you know, the game that cause the HD fanboys to cry.  It will save the Wii U.

Game & Wario, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, Wonderful 101, Lego City, Rayman Legends all are coming out before the end of June.  They'll be alright.

They won't. Scratch Rayman and Lego Cities from your list since this is Japan and those IP's are not popular there.

Wonderful 101, will be small, along the lines of Little King's Story or the previous Platinum Games.

Pikmin 3, hardly a system seller considering past entries.

Game & Wario, the previous games in this series were popular, this one I'll give you, but not big enough to produce a boost that lasts more than 2 weeks.

Wii Fit U, may or may not be a system seller, and unknown to what degree. If we take al ook at the 3DS, not all the previous break out hits for the DS translated into 3DS hits, the most notable being Brain Training.

Wouldn't call that being alright and then less so, when we don't have confirmation of all those games hitting Japan before Q3.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

so can somebody explain the vita increase?

If I'm not mistaken, this is usually a great week for Sony hardware.  They traditionally get big boosts during New Years I've been told.

do you know why?

on new year the kids get the so called "otoshidama", usually that's money

so then they go out to buy sth. with that, which is why the first week of the year traditionally is the one with best entertainment related sales in Japan

there is a christmas boost aswell, as that's seen as a day for couples and couples may exchange presents on that occasion

I'm not sure why Sony did profit more from this this time around though.

hehe :) Japan marketing pushing the 3ds over the DS has worked.. everywhere else the DS is still selling.
But on the topic of the PS2.. that console is just a beast :) <3 my ps2... before it died on me :(
(those lasers were pretty crap tbh but you didn't care, cause it had good games)

i think if Sony would have had a game released this wk, they could have sold 70-100k PS3's.

Well, the Wii U is a mess, so it falling behind the PS3 in weekly sales was always a serious possibility. I think in the next few months the PS3 will stabilize around or above 20k and the Wii U somewhere between 10-15k.

Wii U x Vita in the next months... who will win???

Correct.

Well, this is the most pleasing Japan sales thread I've seen in quite some time!

I'm saddened to see the Wii-U decrease. Although, not entirely surprised. I know this is the big week of console increases over there, but given the drop it had last week, I just couldn't see it really keeping up. I had it pegged as staying about even in sales, so I guess it's not done too bad. But it needs support. With only 3 games scheduled for Q1 and only a couple more announced as in the pipeline, Nintendo need to get announcing something to keep it relevant through Q1-2.  A third iteration of Monster Hunter won't cut it, but Mario & NintendoLand are doing nicely.  Though, I don't think they'll care too much. As long as it picks up in Q3-4, that'll be enough.

Vita increase is also pleasing. I had also pegged it for staying about even, perhaps minor increase. I didn't really have 15k up in mind. Haven't seen it this high since... Miku, lol. Hopefully a taste of things to come in February, though I doubt it'll last after this week.

PS3 and PSP are also really nice. PSP back up to One Piece numbers, PS3 holding steady. Yes, I know it's down YoY etc., but still, for 7 year old home console hardware, I think it's doing alright.

Cursory hat tip to 3DS as usual :)
