I'm not sure I get the graph, but I love this comparison.

5.5-7 mil. Better than la... | 33 | 28.21%
5-5.5 mil. Over Nintendo... | 13 | 11.11%
Under 5 mil. Dooooooom! | 7 | 5.98%
Under 3 mil. SUPER DOOOOOOOOOM!! | 2 | 1.71%

It all come down to Pokemon vs Pokemon.

Which graph is giving you trouble? The one in the OP is cumulative YTD. The ones in the weekly update posts are weekly comparisons.

In all likelihood, yes! That could very well be the case. There are some interesting questions leading into it (NSMB vs MH4?), but that seems like the final showdown, so to speak.

I didn't get the Weekly ones at first.
Thanks!
It's remarkable that we're even having this conversation. The 3DS is clearly a hugely popular system. So much for the "smartphones killing dedicated gaming devices" canard :)

It still kinda is. Most people I know that used to own a DS 5 years ago own a smartphone now. I don't know if they're just waiting on Pokemon or they just don't care. Japan is saving the 3DS, the western territories have yet to accept it.
Pokemon really has to be huge this time.

Awesome thread and I love seeing the short comparisons about what titles released each week.
Keep up the good work!
Gooooo 3DS! I had a thread b4 (cant find) about how much 3DS's will sell this year in Japan! I thought over DS's Current record and close to 9mil! Hope it goes to 10mil!

Well, North American and European consumers are buying plenty of 3DS systems. The Japanese numbers are huge, but the other numbers are nothing to sneeze at.
Also we have to remember that DS was a monumental success. It will probably end up as the best selling video game system of all time. So if 3DS can keep pace with it, that's remarkable.
Week 5!
DS 06 -- 22,662
3DS 13 -- 80,080
Very good hold for 3DS, even a small increase over last week despite having no new releases. On the DS end of things, Eyeshield 21: Max Devil Power releases to decent first-week sales of about 40k, but fail to prevent the massive 79% hardware decline to sub-25k levels. This nosedive is most likely due to the announcement of the DS Lite; DS hardware sales will remain very low for the next three weeks, but come back that much stronger after the redesigned console's March release.
Week 6 preview: DS sales fall to their 2006 low, barely hovering above 10k. 3DS sales will be bolstered by the release of Dragon Quest VII 3D, sure to be one of the console's best-selling titles of 2013. Expect to see the greatest disparity in hardware sales of the year next week, with the 3DS outselling the DS by more than 10 to 1.
The tally thus far:
DS 06 -- 346,352
3DS 13 -- 640,470
Adv 3DS +294,118
