Forums - Sony - Sony Won't Release PS4 until 2014 and It Won't Be a Gimped Console.

Sony should not focus on power next gen. When they did focus on power with the PS3, it only gave them a minuscule advantage over the 360, and resulted in an extremely expensive console. You seem to have forgotten about how poorly the PS3 did during the first half of the generation. Either that  or you're posting from a fans perspective rather than a business perspective, which it seems you are. Sony needs to go back to their PS1/PS2 strategy and ditch the focus on power altogether imo.

Yes, Sony said they've never been first or the cheapest, but so what? First of all, they didn't even make a claim, they just noted a trend with their hardware. Second of all, even if they made a claim, that means nothing. Remember when they called the Wii a fad? Yeah....Third of all, they can still release a PS4 this year at >$300 and they wouldn't be first or the cheapest. This quote doesn't support your argument at all.

But why would fans of games like "Uncharted", "The Last of Us", and "Beyond:  Two Souls" be interested in buying a $400.00 console that isn't really going to offer much of an improvement over what's available on PS3?

@ManUtdFan: Actually even the 720p is a stretch for PS360, as lots the games run on sub-720 resolution.

Shit, in that case my TV is lying to me!

Sony doesn't care about selling more than 360 they care about profits. And the ps4 won't be a beast it will be stronger than wiiU (2-3x) but they won't take a risk making massive losses again thanks to their bad financial situation.

Actually, I don't think that their current financial status is the biggest reason. They released two consoles that were cheap and less powerfull than the competitors and won by huge margins. They released one console that was expensive and powerfull and lost. It's clear that people prefer price, expensive consoles always fail. A gen never was won by a console launched for more than US$ 300 in USA.

I really don't know how Sony lost since they sold close to 600,000 consoles last week and Wii bately managed to sell 200,000, and that was a normal week at the end of this gen.

Wii is close to 100 million units, PS3 is close to 75 millions. It's a loss. We can say that isn't a bad one, since the mokentum now favors PS3 in sales and in the end of the gen the sales gap will probably be much closer.

OP. I hope you're right. I fear you're wrong.

Ideal for sony would be to release the PS4 only once it has 10X the power of the last gen. Releasing a console just 2-4 times as powerful might appear indistinguishable to the 'layperson' consumer - thus go unnoticed. In that event, it would be lacking the next-gen buzz or vibe that everyone gets so excited about.

Just to add, it's usually the "wow!" factor that sells consoles, whether it be the revolutionary graphics tech performance, the cutting edge peripherals, or the plain quality of the games. People don't want cheap, rushed to market crap that resembles last gen, so what would be the point of a 'gimped console'.

1. Aside from Uncharted, I'm not sure if there are many fans of those games, at least not enough to drastically effect Sony's strategy.

2. Most gamers don't actually care about graphics.

3. What makes you think a $400 2013 console won't offer much of an improvement over the PS3 which is barely more powerful than a $400 2005 console ( the 360)

PS4K will be a beast and most definitely a huge leap above the Wii U. Sony can already go head to head with Nintendo's system for the time being with the money making PS3. Meanwhile the PS4K will be slowly gaining sales from the hardcore crowd with its loses balenced out by the PS3. This could work great if Microsoft's console is only 2-3x more powerful than the Wii U. However if XBOX8 is comparable to the PS4K and we have a similar setup as the 6th gen then this could really mess with Sony's plan. It's definitely a gamble, but all signs point to this being their strategy.

You predicting it will get called "PS4K"?  That would be a cool name for it though.  Of course, likely to see PS 4000, rather than 4K.

@EdHieron: Well, the fanboys would. Anyway, you could have used the same argument with PS2 to PS3. Basically the biggest improvement PS3 brought over PS2, was HDD for downloadable games and game data.

Sony lost because the Wii has sold nearly 100m and the PS3 just above 70m... End of story. Next gen has already started, and if the PS4 launches in 2014 it'll end up last; MS will surely launch x3ox this year so it would only be stupid of Sony to wait a whole year to release the PS4. Expect the x3ox to be on par with PS4 - even if the PS4 is launched a year later. Only the hardcore SOny fans would wait a whole year to get a next gen machine, and in the mean time Nintendo and MS will sell new systems  like crazy, leaving SOny in the dust. No, Sony NEEDS to release the PS4 this year or be last next gen the whole gen. They'll start in last place and they'll end in last place if your prediction holds true.

Oh, they might announce it at E3 this year just to stoke the fires, but even if they're following a schedule like Nintendo's with  Wii U, it still wouldn't be coming out 'til Holiday 2014.

And you're really putting too much emphasis on the importance of a year's head start.  Just look at the current gen.  Playstation 3 launched one year later and at a price tag of $200 more than the 360, yet they're still going to pass 360 when everything is over and done with.  This time IF 360 manages to get theirs out in 2013 the Playstation would still be launching only a year later and more than likely at no more than at a $100.00 higher price tag.

Now would it really be that disastrous for Sony to release a year later?  Where would it really hurt them?  Well, it would hurt them in America, but as demonstrated this gen, that's really not going to hurt them that much since they could still beat the 360's successor with strong sales in the European and Japanese marketplace.  PS3 will continue to dominate in Europe 'til the release of PS4 whenever that is and Microsoft's consoles will never catch on in Japan.

Really, the smartest move Sony can make to keep their old fans and to attract new ones ( since their games lineup is not as casual friendly as Nintendo's) is to release another State of the Art Console with a price point that is initially more attractive than the PS3's was at launch.

An honestly priced (ie. that they're not losing on and that is as full of the greatest tech that can be bought for the price at the time) $500 console released Holiday 2014 is their best bet.

360 launched with two SKUs: a $400 model and a $500 model. PS3 launched with two SKUs: a $500 model and a $600 model. Why does it seem people only remember the $400 360 and $600 PS3 when it's convenient to their argument? It only serves to eat away at your credibility, to be honest.

So the 360 launched a year earlier than PS3 with a price $100 cheaper, and look what happened. The marketshare that Sony once empired quickly evaporated, and I don't think even Microsoft counted on standing equal ground with Sony so quickly. You're saying that you expect Sony to do the exact same thing by releasing a console a year later and $100 more expensive. Like someone said earlier, only the most hardcore Sony fans are waiting for that, just like the PS3. Many of them will just skip launch and wait for a price drop, just like they did with the PS3 (and with the Vita now).

It seems like most Sony fans on this site want it to make a console that appeals to them and them only while Sony runs itself straight into the dirt.

1.  Considering the consoles based on graphics horsepower had over 50% of this console generation's marketshare, I would say that's a significant indicator right there.

3.  Because at $300.00 the Wii U doesn't.

@ManUtdFan: Yes it is. It's because of a device called upscaler, it scales the native resolution of a game to a wanted resolution for your TV.
