Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Team Ninja: Wii U console is next-gen

"To be completely blunt and honest, there’s no way that the Wii U processor is ‘horrible and slow’ compared to other platforms."

Cool the Wii U CPU is not 'horrible and slow".

"If you’re basing this simply on processor speed, then it’s not next generation."

WTF? Now the Wii U CPU is 'horrible and slow'?

So it just confirmed what the 4A said using other words.

Epic.

ps3 and 360 launch titles looked awful. Not one game looked as good as AC3 or blops2. Wii u isn't leaps ahead of ps360, but it shows potential.

It's obvious that no launch game looked as good as AC3 or Black Ops 2 (though that one is not that far off), but they were surely not awful looking:

I think he ment aweful compaired to how games look now on those consoles. Gun compaired to Halo 4 is a huge jump on the 360. They look like they come from different generations. The real point is no one has had time to tap into the Wii Us potential yet, so most likely after 5 years it may look like a huge jump over the PS3 and xbox360. But as for graphics, AI and other backend systems it wont compete with the PS4 and xbox720. But it has a very different system than those two most likely will with it's unique gamepad.

Though the xbox smartglass is very cool and does some awesome stuff, developers cant rely on all people having a tablet/smartphone to integrate. Especially kids.

Because technology is very important as it allows better AI, and better graphics help a lot with immersion. I'd say the Wii wasn't next gen. If you ignore hardware then what makes something next gen becomes very messy (release date, name etc all have issues when compared to PS3 slim, or xbox elite - think about it ;) )

Well, so you claim the PS2 wasn't in the same gen as Xbox and Gamecube, as these two clearly had considerably more power?

The difference between PS2 and GC/Xbox was visible, but not enough to be a game changer. The difference in power between Wii and PS360 is much bigger, enough to make some PS360 impossible to port to the Wii without a complete change on it's mechanics.

Compare God of War 2 and Halo 2. There is a difference, but isn't that big. Now compare Mario Galaxy and Uncharted 3/Halo 4. It's a huge, huge difference.

Team Ninja: Wii U processor not “horrible and slow”, console is next-gen

A couple of months ago, one Metro: Last Light developer made a remark stating that the Wii U has a “horrible, slow” CPU. But Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi, responding to the claim, says this is not so. Hayashi feels the comment “was just 4A trying to find a scapegoat for a simple business decision on their part.”

“The Wii U is an infant that’s just been born. It’s a little unfair to compare it to mature platforms that people have been working on for over five years. I’m sure people will find ways to bring out even more power as the platform matures. To be completely blunt and honest, there’s no way that the Wii U processor is ‘horrible and slow’ compared to other platforms. I think that comment was just 4A trying to find a scapegoat for a simple business decision on their part.”

Hayashi does acknowledge that the Wii U may not be a next-gen console from the standpoint of its processor speed. However, he believes its next-gen nature stems from innovation and “Wii U being a new idea that challenges existing platforms”.

“If you’re basing this simply on processor speed, then it’s not next generation. If you’re basing this on Wii U being a new idea that challenges existing platforms, then it definitely is next generation. It is a console videogame platform that is now independent of the TV. Nobody has done that before. It’s no mistake to say that we have entered a period where it’s difficult to provide an obvious difference to many players based on processor speed alone. Players want new innovation that includes the environment in which you play and services you use, rather than just raw processor spec. Nintendo is at the forefront of that innovation. I’m looking forward to seeing what the other platforms come up with in the future.”

Can I have the link please? I'd love to know if he talked PS360 port of NG3RE.

Anyway why the Ninja Gaiden 3 on Wii U is not better than the PS360 version???

The WiiU is weak, the WiiU is NEXT GEN, Who do i believe ?

Not really. When the 360 came out PGR3 blew everything else out of the water in terms of graphics. If the Wii U wants to prove itself as being next gen, then it needs a title that clearly does this. In terms of efficiency it's clearly next gen shaving 100W off the load of the 360, but which gamer really cares about that?

I think that is a bit of an exaggeration. I would say that PGR3 was an improvement but did not really blow "everything else" out of the water, nor did any launch game for 360 when comparing it to the original xbox.

Forza (Xbox)

PGR3 (Xbox 360)

Ninja Gaiden Black (Xbox)

Kameo (Xbox 360)

Doom 3 (Xbox)

Condemned Criminal Origins (Xbox 360)

Looking back, one must admit that the Xbox was truly a beast for it's time.

" Rebellion Against Tyrants Is Obedience To God"

I know people have different ideas on what the term "next gen" means, for me, tech wise, I consider it to be in the same league as Xbox/PS3. Nintendo are in their own little timeframe.

The argument that "Look at the early games on PS3/Xbox" and look at these ones made later, would have been true had the wii-u came out at the same time as those consoles. People look at those early games and immediately think they will get the same level of improvements on the wii-u over the next 12 months. They won't and they will be disappointed.

When the PS3/Xbox came along, these were a big step up from the previous gen, process, software and performance had to be worked on, and it took a while to get these tools/systems in place. They are not starting from scratch now that a wii-u has come along. The major thing that companies can work on for the Wii-u is the performance stability but certainly from 3rd parties, its whether they have the inclination to do so... over time if 3rd party game sales increase, there will be improvements, but I really don't think there will be this big leap in graphics from the current games coming out such as BO and AC3.

Does that mean we can finally say the Wii is last gen without getting banned?

Wii IS last gen, along with PS360.
