Forums - Sales - Handheld market declines 16.5% in 2012

3DS did pretty well. If the Vita manages to step up its game this year, it should be fine. 3DS sales are even higher than NDS sales at its time, so its really just the PSV.

But I think the DS sold something like 20m in its 3rd year, something I don't think 3DS will do... 18m tops.

The 3DS doing at least as good as the monster that was the DS for now already disproves the point.

If smartphones and tablets have such a big impact on handheld gaming, how come the last generations market leader could get even bigger? Surely the problem lies elsewhere, like failing competition or the dying old generation.

If Nintendo releases on of the big hitters 2013 (like Pokemon Gen6 or a new Legend of Zelda game) I think they'll manage to do 20mil sales. Just look how good the 3DS did even the week after christmas (~60% of the sales and no.1 console). Definately not impossible.

theyve already released some really big hitters, like mario and mario kart. next year theyve got animal crossing coming out in the west, so maybe a pokemon to the holidays is plausible - but is that enough to push it to 20m? i dont know... i hope so though!

And of course people are going to blame it on smarthphones, ignoring that the 3DS and Vita aren't exactly the strongest handheld offerings of all time...

if you we're a dad and your kid asked you for a gaming device and you had to choose between a 200$ handheld plus 50$ for every game or a 399$ IPHONE with free games and 1$ games plus it's a phone.

What would you choose?

i would choose an iphone without even thinking about it.

If you were a dad, and you kid asked you for a gaming device, and you had to choose between a SNES with $60+ games or a commodore 64 with much cheaper games (on disc or cassette or whatever) pus other functionalities what would you choose?

Thing is, kids don't say "daddy I want a game platform". They will say "daddy I want Pokemon".

Kids don't care about graphics all they wanna see is a little guy on screen moving and they will be happy. Am i right or am i right

Would bright, attractive colors fit in the same category?

Yup and the IPHONE got all of it. Don't get me wrong i'm not defending APLLE i'm just stating the facts

Maybe for four-year-old that is true, but 8+ ? No way.

I LOVE ICELAND!

The handheld.

For one, the games are more like $40. For the $400 iPhone, one could buy a handheld console plus five games (at normal price). Which is pretty much the attach-ratio for a handheld anyway. One handheld game is quality-wise 100x any mobile game. Kids aren't dumb enough to not know this. A smartphone app is fun for 10 minutes, then it never get's looked at again.

Not even mentioning the fact that on top of the $400 iPhone comes a mobile subscription, making it even more expensive than it seems. Unless you wouldn't want to use the device's main purpose; calling people. An iPad costs more like $600, so that makes the handheld's advantage even bigger.

it's not fun for you but it is for a 7yo, just face the fact's smartphones are killing the vita and 3ds even the coo of Nintendo approves my comment.

No they don't. They say daddy I want an iPhone.

i speak from personal experience.

And they say that because they want its games or becuse having a phone has always been a 'cred' thing with kids?

I LOVE ICELAND!

Generation transition simple as that, 2011 the pervious Gen where still selling resonably well but declined last year it's to be expected. 3DS is selling just as well as the DS at this point however the Vita looks like it will flop.

+ I don't see why anybody would buy a Iphone for gaming they suck at it.

Don't forget how incredible the legs of those games are. They'll sell consoles for the entire LT of the 3DS!

EDIT: Why don't we bet: 1 month sig control. I win if the 3DS sells more than 20mil this year, you win if it sells less. Deal?
