Forums - Sales - Rumors of PS4 Restricting Used Games Send GameStop Stock Tumbling

I wouldn't mind all digital if they dropped the prices. When something drops so you can get it used for $10.00 and they are selling the digital copy for $39.99 it's hard to understand why they are charging so much.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!

To be fair to the investors that are dumping the stock. Sony has bucked conventional wisdom quite often over the coarse of the previous generation. They launched a six hundred dollar console, abandoned backward compatibility, neglected basic security measures, and then taunted hackers and the modding community. Who promptly hacked the shit out of Sony. Sometimes it seems like Sony and common sense are strangers. It isn't stupid at all really for them to give Sony the benefit of the doubt.

Besides it isn't a rumor we are talking about here. It is a patent application, and that makes it a real possibility. If for no other reason then it proves that Sony is tinkering with the idea. That has to mean they haven't discounted the idea out of hand. All you really need to know is that even reasonably intelligent people have been known to do dumb things. It makes sense for investors to pull their money even if they just aren't sure. Their selling doesn't mean that they haven't made money. It could just mean they want to limit their risk.

Wow really? Stock market continues to be a joke.

It's just that simple.

what if they do implement this? but...

Also introduce a loyalty program where you collect "miles" by playing games or earning trophies. Lets say that a bronze trophy earns you 1 point, silver=2, gold = 5, and platinum =10, and you cant "buy" 2%, 5%, 10%, ...75% discount off the face value of the digital game.

With a system like this along with a huge library ps1, ps2, ps3, tittles and all ps4 games released on disc and digital, I think it wouldn't be too bad.

Look I know most of us have different taste of games and the price that we are willing to pay on a game is different. I find the way games are being sold archaic, and desperate need of innovation.

Why charge $60 and hope a shit load of people buy the game at that price? if you are disappointed with the amount of sales, reduce the price and hope more buy, repeat until there is no more potential buyers. A dollar is worth more today than it does tomorrow. This method takes a while collect the maximum amount cash the game would ultimately get once it run down the price latter.

why not make a system where the transactions that would take place at $60, $40, $29.99 all occur on day one instead of 3 months...?

You can't just put a man's hopes and dreams down into words just to have them thrashed. If only.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Have we not been down this road before? Sony was rumored to have this tech for the PS3. Gamestop's solution was that it was prepared to not sell the console. Going down this road could be a boon to Microsoft and Nntendo.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Gamestop would crumble without used game sales and they know it. If PS4 bans used games then Gamestop and other game retailers would refuse to sell PS4 hardware and software. Sony knows they need Gamestop and the other retailers so they can't ban used games.

Unless they plan to cut retail out. But I don't think the world is ready for digital distro.

Actually GameStop wouldn't be able to stop selling Sony products. If Sony takes away used games that cuts into full profit for GameStop. It wouldn't be a good buisness stratedgy for GameStop to just drop everything Sony. They would in turn lose even more money.

If I had to take a guess, if this is true, Sony will sell unlock codes or something similar to a Uplay passport to unlock the game. So places can still sell used games, but people will have to spend an extra 5-10 dollars to get it unlocked for their console.

Typical Kotaku, since when is a tiny 5% loss equate to "tumbling"?

i doubt sony would do this. why would they when they know it would fuck them.
