EDIT: And next year the 3DS will be flat to down again for 2013.  The price cut in 2011 carry forward a great deal of future 3DS sales this year and late last year.

EDIT2: after looking at some of the release from another post, i can see the 3DS positive y/y but below DS growth

I imagine the 3DS will have its best year this year with yearly sales of around 16 million

Not a massive achievement considering it was only out for 10 months in 2011 but I'm glad to see it made it.

Next year will see growth for sure: MH4, Luigi's Mansion, Dragon Quest plus more announcments like a new Pokemon and Zelda should all be enough.

Then there's the inevitable HW redesign, although I think they should hold off another year for that.

Hopefully pokemon gen 6 comes out this year! It seems this will be a fantastic year for japan!

Hard to say without knowing what's in store for the second half of 2013.

By the way, after 95 weeks the 3DS has sold over 1.1 million hardware units more than the DS had at the same point. It's basically going into 2013 with a head start.

In the 52 weeks following week 95, the DS roughly doubled its LTD hardware sales, selling about 25.9 million units. So the 3DS has to sell over 24.8 million consoles in 2013 to stay ahead of the DS. Very difficult for sure, but hardly impossible for a handheld that is home to Monster Hunter, Mario, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing.

3DS needs more (big) games. Ive not bought a game for it since Febuary (RE Revelations). Other than that its a great system and has great sales. Heres to another good year for it.
