Forums - Sales - Halo 4 sells more in 7 weeks than GT:5 sold in its first year

enjoy and celebrate the sales, but just dont be hypocrites and downplay GT5 sales because it was bundled after 3 years

Except people buy the Halo 4 Limited Edition Console because, wait for it, they WANT HALO 4! And they were limited which eliminates any claims of mass bundling. Halo 4 is a much bigger game than GT5 which is the point of this thread, it's also to show that even when Sony's biggest IP is mass bundled for years it still can't do Halo numbers.

People don't buy PS3's because they want GT5, Uncharted 3 or Uncharted 2 & 1, Resistance 1, LittleBigPlanet or Motorstorm, they've just happened to be thrown in. The Uncharted series has been artificially made popular due to Sony's desperate bundling of it to appear to have a hit franchise, it doesn't actually have a large fan base because a lot of people who own the games didn't want them. Gran Turismo is obviously a huge franchise but without every game in the series being mass bundled I doubt it would be much bigger than Gears of War. Resistance 2 & 3 which weren't mass bundled prove most of the sales of Resistance 1 were due to bundling. LittleBigPlanet is fairly popular but look at how much less it sold with LBP2 when it wasn't mass bundled. I don't even have to say anything for Motorstom, the drop off after mass bundling is spectacular. God of War is the only Sony IP that's big due to gamers making it so and not being mass bundled, If GoW3 sold 5.2m (about 5.6m now) in 2 years with very little bundling in its first month of release then imagine if it had GT5 or UC3 level bundling, would have sold over 7 million.

What I'm saying is most of Sony 'big' IP's only appear so because they're mass bundled, Halo and Gears of War don't get bundled outside of limited edition consoles for a couple of weeks/a month and yet can consistently sell 10+ or 6+ million copies with most at full price.

So? It's an FPS...It's not even the best selling FPS on the 360 to come out this year...

You really want to see something impressive? Look at every racing game other than the GT series that's ever come out. GT5 sold nearly 10 million copies (PD has it at about 9.7 right now) in a genre that doesn't sell.

When the sales of the Halo series make up more than half of the lifetime sales for the entire genre let me know.

Oh I must've forgot how well Forza has sold this generation.  Only around 15m copies.  Man that is horrible.

But it is 0.6m, you just said so.  Please dont treat games shipments like hardware shipments.  They dont press a few thousand then a few thousand more to order.  They ship large quantities for extended periods of sales.

and who said anything about shelves and ships.  If PD ships to SCEA or SCEE for future bundles etc they are still shipped as far as PD are concerned.

How many Halo games do you think have been shipped? 9m?  I'd say yes, about that.

It would be 600,000 units of GT5 still yet to be sold from September. Those 600,000 probably wont be done by VGC until say, February? Are you saying that PD shipped stock for ~5 Months?

Its pretty obvious that its undertracked.

1.3 Million is too much, no matter what you say. It wasnt selling outstandingly when the numbers were announced and its nowhere near selling out said September shipment. Nothing will change my mind on this.

Halo 4? No idea. What numbers have Microsoft or 343i released?.

they dont release numbers and you know it.

Go look at the shipment history of GT5 and learn a little.

By Dec 2010 6m

By Sep 2011 7.3m

By Dec 2011 7.4m (100k extra)

By Sept 2012 9.1m

Bt Dec 2012 9.1m I reckon.... zero extra shipped.

Its pretty obvious they ship in large quantities.

It may well be the final shipment for some considerable time for all we know.

ALL I AM SAYING is shipment data alone does not tell us confident sell through numbers for software.

You can currently offer me nothing more than this.

so we go by your assumptions now? cool

"ALL I AM SAYING is shipment data alone does not tell us confident sell through numbers for software."

it pretty much does, mostly in this  case to, as they wouldnt ship if there was not any demand and people werent buying it. simple logic.

You are basing your opinions around assumptions as well and then stating them as facts.  He is being a little more logical than you actually.  It is clear that Gran Turismo is being shipped in high amounts and it has yet to sell through it's last shipment which is why we haven't seen another shipment.  If they were rare to find this would be a different story but you can go anywhere and buy GT5 which means it hasn't sold through it's shipment of 9.19m.

This whole thread has become pathetic and about downplaying the other game but if you use a business mind you can clearly see which has been more successful.  But we will ignore that and keep downplaying both games.  But if you guys are going to argue, don't go off of your opinions.  9.19m is shipped not sold and it is also a possibility that Halo 4 has already shipped 9m as we don't know how many it's shipped, but hey let's ignore that too and then bring up a limited edition bundle that is $400.  Not to mention that people who bought that bundle were probably big fans of Halo and bought it for Halo 4.  Oh and btw that means that the bundle sold for an extra $150.  Now I'm not going to do the math but I'm pretty sure that pays for both Halo, the 360, and makes money.  But hey let's ignore that and while we are at it let's ignore that GT5 is one of the most bundled games this gen and it has been on bargain bin price for a long time.  Let's ignore that Halo 4 has sold 7m at full retail price and without bundle.  let's ignore all the DLC it has sold and how many XBL gold account it has got to sign up.  Let's just say Halo 4 has not been successful what so ever and downplay it and say GT5 is the most successful exclusive.  Oh wait am I forgetting about Halo 3?  Oh we can ignore that too since we ignore all other logic.

at what point did i ever downplay halo or say its not a successful? or say that its not a huge ass money maker. i actually never said anything about halo other than it had that bundle. and the most succsessful exclusive isnt GT5, or halo4 or 3. its mario kart. my posts arent about downplaying halo. as for GT shipments, until PD update them we have no idea if they shipped more or not, and thats what im saying from the start. PD numbers showed that GT was undertracked with every time they update them.

Then don't ever talk about Forza being bundled.  Bundle aruments are always pointless and irrelevant.

not sure if your serious or not. but if people dont buy because they want GT5, uncharted, resistance, littlebigplanet or motorstorm. why the hell do they buy the console for?

Most of that statement is for the entire thread to read.  A lot of people are downplaying it, not you necessarily.  And yes Mario is by far the biggest exclusive.  I should have said for the HD twins.  What was aimed at you was the first part.  We know it has shipped 9.19m not sold.  It is very likely that it has close to 1m games in stores just like it is very plausible that Halo 4 has 1m in stores.  Once they sell through that then make another shipment then that whole argument about it being undertrracked can be brought back up.  Until then it is just pointless because we don't know how much is in stores.

And befor eyou say anything yes Gran Turismo 5 has sold amazingly well and I'm not trying to downplay that.  Hell I don't even like Gran turismo 5 and I bought it at launch and I'll say it's bee a success.  But this thread has been annoying on all ends and any body who actually knows how a business works can say with 100% no doubt that Halo has been bigger for MSFT than GT for Sony this generation.  That is not an argument but a fact.

I don't think you know how shipping works.

Bananaking and carl pretty much said everything else i would add to this thread except - GT has always had legs and is a franchise known for its legs.

Off topic - people said 360 fans were severly unrepresented here... one read through in this thread and I can say thats just not true. I don't know why people still continue thinking that
