Their approach doesn't work because their approach is a long term one and its obvious they aren't aiming to outsell the 3DS.

Why would they release consoles with games who look worse than what they can currently offer?

Where did I say that I expected the Vita to outsell the 3DS? Even with a long term approach the Vita is doing terribly, it shouldn't be tracking this far behind where the PSP was. Again, Sony should be more aggressive with the Vita in order to attract more consumers and third party support. At this rate, the Vita won't be half as successful as the PSP.
They can and will bring very powerful console next gen as they have always done.

if they were going to do that, then they may as well not bother releasing new consoles.

If price is the issue, they can't really start being aggresive until they cut the price.
It's more than just a price issue though. I'm not surprised it tracking behind the PSP. The market has changed a lot since then and unlike Nintendo, Sony won't do an $80 price cut 6 months after launch. There isn't much Sony can do but try and secure some portable exclusivity for big name games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty along with some great 1st party support.

Ummm, the Wii U is more powerful than the PS3.

What would be the point? If they're going to do that, might as well just stick with the 360/PS3, which already have established userbases of 70+ million (good luck catching that, Nintendo).

I personally think this isn't a bad idea, mostly because development cost have gone way too expensive, and I'm sure the cost will be double (Crytek said this, although I can't find the article), if that's the case we pretty much are only going to get Call of Duty, Fifa, AC, etc, and very rarely are we going to see a new IP (in terms of AAA games of course), and that's something I don't want to happen. We will probably reach a point when selling 1m units won't be enough in order to break even (I'm sure that's probably happening right now) and if that's the case a lot of companies will go out of business, only the big guys will remain. |

If that's happening with a game that have sold 1.54m units (according to VGC) I can't imagine how next gen games will have to sell in order to be successful.
