Forums - Gaming - The Ps3 will FINALLY pass the xbox360 at some point,so what,s the big deal?it,s only 2013

Because plenty of Sony fans are upset at Xbox trolls that flaunted the 360 selling more than the PS3 despite releasing a year earlier?

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

It's one of the biggest deals we can talk about. What else is there to talk about on a sales site? You see the DS vs. PS2 discussion? Yeah, imagine that but multiply it by around 2.

You see some of the most pathetic comments in that thread.  People arguing over a console that is over a decade year old i just don't get.  The thing is we don't even know how much the PS2 has sold.  We are just guessing but people act like they know.  This is another one that I think is going to get blown way out of proportion and a nother argument that I will stay out of because of that.

No, we aren't. We are using evidence to estimate sales. This is an attitude that, imo, needs to go because we're on a goddamn sales website. We discuss the sales on a sales website. PS2 vs. DS sales is a hot topic that deserves to be discussed, even though we don't get "hard" numbers from Sony. We don't need to be fed hard numbers to be allowed to discuss the sales, do we? No, because we know better than that.

What I'm saying is we are now guessing how much the PS2 has sold.  nobody really knows exactly.  What we know is it has sold somewhere between 150-160m consoles and anybody that throws out an exact number is full of it.

Hi all i have seen many a thread announcing the inevitable passing of the xbox360 by the ps3,and for some it seems like such a big hoopla.but why?

this gen is virtually over.if the systems were in reverse positions it would be a different story, hmmmmm?please enlighten me as to why one system, brand is held in such high regards, and is allowed to get aways with almost any mis-steps while the others are demonized?HAPPY 2013 TO ALL.

may we all try to live in harmony in the next gen.

It's just console supporters making arbitrary goals to aim for.
In reality, what should be considered is that with launch dates adjusted, the PS3 has considently sold more then the 360. I personally put that down to the bluray player on it.
Other then saying that bluray was therefore a good investment by Sony, can anything else be drawn from sales? Probably one last thing. Without a new media format, how will the next playstation sell? In fact, how well will any of them sell? When the 360 was released, bluray was still fighting HD-DVD, and when the PS2 and xbox were released, VHS were still in circulation. Now with bluray being a widely adopted and embedded successor to DVD, as well as the growing trend of streaming media, will the next consoles be able to purposefully advertise an optical media without being ignored or laughed at? The next consoles are stepping into very murky waters indeed.

I don't know why Jay is even saying that.  We actually do have hard numbers.  At the end of FY2011 (March 2012), Sony announced that 155.1M PS2s had been shipped.  We also know that from Sony's wording in their last quarter, the PS3 was down YOY.  So, the PS2 must have shipped at least 1M for that to be true.  So, the PS2, has shipped at least 156.1M, as of Sept. 2012.  Or should I not be talking about this on a sales site?

Edit:  Damn, I used logic to figure that out.  To Jay, that means I'm full of it.  Oh, well.

Some people like to cling to something to the very end. If you honestly care if the PS3 sales more than the 360 then your a sad person in my book, and the fact that you care so much proves to me that your a no life loser who probably spends half their day on Vgchartz. That's just my opinion whether you like it or not doesn't matter to me. Ok rant over.

Great attitude on a sales website.

When it comes to this subject I think that fans on both sides (PS3, 360) are doing a lot of "moving the goal posts".

PS3 Fans: The PS3 is going to pass the 360 in 2010 2011 2012 2013

360 Fans: The PS3 is never going to pass the 360 Yeah well the gen is almost over so it doesn't it matter

lol

Funny, but true.

You are already over 3m off and that's just with this years' predictions! Yet your predictions for 2013 and 2014 are even more ridiculous! It will lose even more ground and you really think it will sell so well, into 2017???!? even after all console manufacturers have released their nextgen consoles? I suggest you should revise your predictions!

3m off? 13.2m for the year... Sony already shipped 8.0m at 4th November... more 5.2 million for November and December... I think I'm in the right path... I can be wrong by 500k but more than that seems unlikely.

For 2013 the PS3 will ship more than 12 million... that's common sense... and the others years I think I'm off at maximum 1 million per year.... so 110 million.

Yeah, and I don't like it. Just figured I'd tell you.

To be truthful I always knew the PS3 would surpass the 360. Although I don't think it will be in 2013.

Also, I think MS fans don't like this for two reasons. One, it means MS couldn't beat Sony, even with all the horrible mistakes Sony made early on (pricing, 1-1 1/2 years late, and no real SW support for a year or two). And two, it shows just how strong the PS brand is. That they could have so much working against them at the start and still place 2nd and end up selling ~90M. This is only going to help them next gen, especially in EU and Japan. They will also have a console that is relatively the same price as the NeXbox and will be coming out within 6 months of the NeXbox's launch.

Well of course MS fanboys will be a little dissapointed but they've been expecting it to happen for years since PS fanboys talk about it all the time.

And you're acting like Microsoft made no mistakes. RROD was a gigantic mistake, and probably the biggest one made by any console maker this generation.

The PS brand is strong, and was VERY strong when the PS3 launched, and that has helped the PS3 a lot. But now, the PS brand is much weaker then what it was 7 years ago.

You really shouldn't just throw around the word fanboy like that.  Anyway, yes, RROD was a big mistake.  However, luckily for MS, other than the 1B it cost them in repairs, it was mostly swept under the rug.  I'm guessing that was helped by the fact that their biggest market was America.  There were countless posts and videos of people saying "No big deal, they fix it for free" or "That's what you get for buying the low-end model" or, and this is my favorite, "Just buy a new one." Don't get me wrong, they won't be able to survive that twice.  But, I suppose the late launch of the PS3, as well as it costing $200 more, allowed the majority of people to ignore RROD.

Also, the PS brand is just as strong.  Yes, the PS3 will only come close to matching the PS1's numbers, but that was mostly due to its rocky start.  I imagine next gen we should see the PS brand in full spirits, again.

It wasn't just "swept under the rug". It cost them a lot, and hurt the Xbox brand. Not to mention, many people switched to the PS3 after their Xbox got the RROD. I know so many people who purchased a PS3 because their Xbox got RROD and were very angry with Microsoft.

I never said the PS brand was weaker than Xbox, I said its much weaker than it was 7 years ago. If we are comparing it to Xbox, then I would say that the PS brand is still bigger.

I don't know... like some already said, it doesn't matter much at this point but Sony fans that believed hard about this for years will at last see their wet dream come true, good thing if it helps them sleep better.

To me it's a surprise it took this long. If you analyse correctly, Sony has been hit hard this gen. Being number two doesn't change a thing when next gen comes. Look where they were last gen. They completely dominated both Ninty and MS but this gen...

Their hardware featured way more that the competition.
They had free internet multiplayer access.
They had Blue Ray.
They made a lot of incredible exclusives.
They started with the biggest brand in video gaming.

Their big competitor (360) didn't have it easy at all.

RROD that tarnished 360's image for at least 3 years which, deny it all you like, resulted in people not buying 360 because of this.
Sold next to nothing in Japan. Proof is that if you remove 360's Japanese sells, it's still number two right now.
Didn't have as much flamboyant exclusives as Sony.
You had to pay to play online.
Didn't have a blueray player.
Didn't have a wireless router.

So yeah, in the end, they were hit pretty bad, they had everything to beat the competition but failed to. Next gen will be interresting.
