There was no price cut this year for the PS3, in fact, like I stated above, it got a $20 price increase in America.  And the 360 didn't dominate the PS3 this holiday season, it slightly outsold it, which is why the PS3 will have a gap 1.3M+ over the 360 for the whole year.  And with the release of one 1st party exclusive next year, its obvious that MS is getting ready for next gen and will probably not push the 360 like you are hoping.  And yes, the 360 will have a price cut next year, but so will the PS3, which will have more of an affect than the 360 one.

@ Psyberius

You may want to look at the numbers, again.  The PS3 is only behind by 2M, not 3M.  And for the past 3 months, the 360 has only won 6 out of 13 weeks, and not by a large margin, hence the huge lead the PS3 has for the entire year.

If I told all you Sony fanboys 10 years ago that Sony would be in last place this gen and losing to the Xbox and the Wii, i'd be the laughing stock of these threads. But you ain't laughing anymore huh? It really puts things into perspective. I mean it took several years and billions of $ for Microsoft to finally get the Xbox off the ground, and now it's finally paying off. And for a well established brand like the Playstation to take last place behind Xbox 360 for 7 years is an incredible feat for Microsoft, and Nintendo too.

a feat for MS yes, but for the mighty Nintendo no. Nintendo was king 3x previous to this so winning is nothing new to them. i'm sure you are speaking in terms of how big PS1-2 was.

but when you put all of Nintendos gen's (handhelds not included) in combined number, Sony and Nintendo prove to be closer to an even playing field.

NES: 60m

Wii: 100m

SNES: 50m

N64: 40m

GC: 21m

271 consoles sold.

PS3: 71m

PS2: 160m (estimated since the point it was no longer being tracked by vgc/wikipedia has it at 155m since March of this yr.)

PS1: 105m

336 consoles sold or you can subtract 5m based on wikipediamaking it 331

difference. 65m or 60m based on wikipedia.

the bigger picture here is that, out of the big 3. Nintendo knows victory, although Sony has sold more with less consoles. Nintendo has won 3 of its 5 existing gen's.

the reason the feet in this the 7th gen. is MS alone to own is that they took and shared Sonys market with themwhich wasn't expected.

yea true enough, no one expected Nintendoto win, but no one expected MS to take and control the market Sony once dominated.

It's a sales site so discussion about this is normal. I always wonder though about certain things are okay to discuss here and somethings are not. For instance if you discuss PS3 overtaking 360 then your considered a fanboy.

However, it's perfectly normal for people to look at the UK sales every week and circle the install bases of the Wii and 360 and say not long now. It`s even worse in this case because Nintendo already started there next gen. People even have that in there sigs. Also with 360 on it's way to passing the Wii in the US is normal to discuss, why no thread topic on that being discussed or over rated because of 8 year old tech.

But the double edged sword comes from "defending" Sony in any way in making these points you get a called a fan boy or defensive (sdf) But the goal posts constantly get moved when discussing sales milestones of 360 or Wii. Sony fans sometimes have it rough here, damned if they do and damned if they don`t. I dare someone today to create a pro Sony topic on anything and I guarantee within the first 5-6 posts there will be a 360 supporter (not naming any names) have something negative or down putting about whatever the topic may be.

This x infinity.

I always found it funny that the same people who praise the 360 this late in the game with its milestones, are the same exact people who are saying "so what" when Sony fans celebrate its milestones.  Quite hypocritical.  What's sad is I see WAY more Sony guys offering congrats to MS for their accomplishments, than I see MS guys offering it to Sony.  Most of the time it just the "so what" or "who cares" or "Sony's still doomed."  Idk, maybe its because they hate seeing MS come in 3rd again, regardless of how much ground its gained this gen.

I also don't get people who say that people who care about any of these milestones are "sad persons."  It's really no different to rooting for a sports team.  Except this time, that team is providing you with a personal service.  So I guess if you like sports, and support a specific team, you are also a sad person.

Regarding milestones, it's as simple as expectations. Like.. 70 million shipped. Which is more reason to celebrate, a MS console whose predecessor sold less than 25 million and was not expected to fare much better than that itself, or the Sony console, when both of its predecessors not only hit 70 million in sales but did so in dominant fashion? The answer is obvious. It's actual cause for congrats in one case and kind of a "yeah.. yay" emotionless clap in the other. Do you like football? Lets put it in NFL terms. MS is the Indianapolis Colts in this scenario. Last season they only won 2 games, got dominated from the competition, checked out of the season early, but drafted before anyone else and used that momentum to spring into an amazingly successful season. You could say Sony are the New York football Giants. They were the defending champs, started off slow, had a great midseason run, but then faltered a bit at the end. They went out with a huge 42-7 bang but ultimately no one cares because they missed the playoffs. Or you could say they are the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Atlanta Falcons. So much hype and such good seasons and team pedigree, that nothing short of a Super Bowl win is a success. A team like the Colts deserve praise and congrats for making the playoffs. Other teams, it should be automatic.

You don't see as much praise or congrats for Sony because they have been here before and no one is surprised.

So you're saying Sony has a higher standard of excellence where anything under 100m is considered a failure?  I can see that I guess.  PS3 is disappointing for a Sony console...for now.

lol @ "...for now."

Also, I think MS fans don't like this for two reasons. One, it means MS couldn't beat Sony, even with all the horrible mistakes Sony made early on (pricing, 1-1 1/2 years late, and no real SW support for a year or two). And two, it shows just how strong the PS brand is. That they could have so much working against them at the start and still place 2nd and end up selling ~90M. This is only going to help them next gen, especially in EU and Japan. They will also have a console that is relatively the same price as the NeXbox and will be coming out within 6 months of the NeXbox's launch.

You could look at it that Sony would have eventually picked up a large proportion of their old PS2 userbase if given enough time whereas every sale above 30M Microsoft had to earn. So you could say that Microsoft played a significantly better game this generation and if these conditions repeat themselves then Microsoft may be the one to beat next generation.

The thing is brand loyalty is there, but that is really only for a large minority of gamers.  There are regions, like some found in EU and Japan, that stay relatively loyal, but America is always anyones game.  So, for the majority of gamers, each gen begins anew.  And considering they had such a rocky start on the what is deemed the most important points for a console, price and game support, Sony had a lot to prove.  Especially after they became the butt of many a joke, with some even thinking this would be the end of the PS3.

I will give MS credit, though, did great with the hand they were dealt.  They made sure to keep the price gap an issue.  The only time price became almost a non-issue was when the PS3 dropped to $299.  They made sure to have great 3rd party support, at a time when the PS3 was getting weaker ports.  And they also did a great job pushing Kinect for its first 2 holidays, which helped slow, though not reverse, the shrinking gap.

@ Solidsnake08

Of course MS fans will be on those threads, just as they are now.  Claiming it doesn't matter, while they count the days til the 360 passes the Wii in the UK and US.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

The reason why people say 'Sony screwed up' is that Microsoft made them look bad by doing better than them. Microsoft released powerful hardware which was more cost efficient and a whole year earlier than Sony. Their Xenos GPU architecture as a design choice was the reason why the PS3 was considered 'expensive' because with a similar architecture to the RSX the PS3 would have absolutely wiped the floor with them and hence wouldn't have been 'expensive'. It wasn't a problem that the PS3 was $599, the problem was that the Xbox 360 was better than the PS3 at the time for $399.
