You could look at it that Sony would have eventually picked up a large proportion of their old PS2 userbase if given enough time whereas every sale above 30M Microsoft had to earn. So you could say that Microsoft played a significantly better game this generation and if these conditions repeat themselves then Microsoft may be the one to beat next generation. |
The thing is brand loyalty is there, but that is really only for a large minority of gamers. There are regions, like some found in EU and Japan, that stay relatively loyal, but America is always anyones game. So, for the majority of gamers, each gen begins anew. And considering they had such a rocky start on the what is deemed the most important points for a console, price and game support, Sony had a lot to prove. Especially after they became the butt of many a joke, with some even thinking this would be the end of the PS3.
I will give MS credit, though, did great with the hand they were dealt. They made sure to keep the price gap an issue. The only time price became almost a non-issue was when the PS3 dropped to $299. They made sure to have great 3rd party support, at a time when the PS3 was getting weaker ports. And they also did a great job pushing Kinect for its first 2 holidays, which helped slow, though not reverse, the shrinking gap.

Of course MS fans will be on those threads, just as they are now. Claiming it doesn't matter, while they count the days til the 360 passes the Wii in the UK and US.
