The Vita has sold much more slowly than the 3DS sold pre-price cut. It will take more than an $80 price cut to save the Vita, and frankly, Sony can't even afford that much.

First of all, Sony doesn't need to sell more than the 3ds. That's an unrealistic feat brought up by people like you. Sony isn't expecting or should expect to sell on the same level as nintendo. That market has been dominated by nintendo 20 years before the PSP came to being. Selling 80mil first try is mission accomplished for Sony even though Nintendo sold more.

Secondly, Vita needs as much asaving now as the Ps3 needed in 2006. In other words, none. It needs to sell and make money. Even with a small userbase Sony and 3rd parties can be profitable with the machine as long as they know the market and have reasonable expectations.

Sony = Microsoft
3DS = PS3
Nintendo = Sony
PSP = Xbox

--> you must be blown away that MS managed to achieve just that within 2 generations.

What the fuck are you talking about? MS doesn't even have a handheld because it would loose more money than the 360 did.

I figured out your code. However you are mistaken on so many levels.

I am saying that MS did achieve with home consoles what Sony failed to do in the handheld market.
Nobody expected them to beat (or tie with) Sony, because they ruled previous generations, when MS was not even on the market.

You seem to have a problem to acknowledge that.

OT: I think the Vita is in a market and in situation where even a price cut would not boost sales sustainably.

Why was their a need to bring up microsoft consoles in this thread?  I usually don't say much to MSFT fans on this site simply because you guys are extremely out numbered but their is no need to bring stuff up like that.

Microsoft succesfully taking on Sony in a market they once owned was just an example to prove that it is possible for a company / product to beat the current no. 1. I used that example because it is in the very same industry.

Apple beating Sony for portable music devices could be another example.
Heck Sony beating Nintendo for home consoles for 2 generations could have been used as well. He makes it sound like it was somehow impossible to beat the 3DS in the handheld market and everyone thinking differently has no clue. The truth is it is possible and Sony actually aimed for it - they just failed.

Ok, that makes sense.  But Sony likely missed their chance when the PSP didn't deliver.  It did good in tis first few years and then sank.  Playstation is no longer the dominate brand they once were so the Vita will likely struggle for a long time unless Japan accepts it

Well the first Xbox did not deliver either, yet the 360 managed to give the PS3 a hard time. So no, it was not a lost battle when the Vita launched.

I wouldn't say it didn't deliver since it was a brand new product and competed with nintendo hand in hand.  PSP was well known because of sony was in the handheld market so it sold strictly off of brand name for a while.  XBOX was not a brand name.

Currently looking at the Vita's games, price, etc. I think it is a great value and a ton of fun! :D

The issue, as far as sales are concerned, is its MARKETING.

Holy crap does it suck.

If this was an Apple product WITHOUT Apple branding, it would have at least tripled Vita's hardware sales based on Apple's marketing skills ALONE.

Sony does not need to drop the price. 169.99 and 249.99 with a 32G memory card / 3months of PSN+

Both Sony and Nintendo won their first and second generations. Both have won generations with a huge advantage over the competition (Ninty with NES and Sony with PS2). They have launched systems that sold more than 100 million units (PS1, PS2, DS and Wii will do it soon). MS lost their first two gens and never achieved any of the other accomplishments.

Their history is more similar to Sega (first gen doing badly, launching second gen early and gaining market but without winning), so I'm not blown away with that, the other two are way more impressive.

Has the latest die shrink been implemented for the Vita yet? That should help. Also, the OLED screen of the Vita should go down in price bc it is still considered an exotic and high end kind of technology. Expect the prices of OLED screens, and therefore the vita, to come down in the next couple of years.

So that is two ways that the manufacturing price oat of the vita will go down.

That is one way to spin it.

Vita needs/should have been a lot of things

- Should have kept this look (with a few changes)

- Should be $199

- Should have stolen Dragon quest or kept monster hunter

- Should of had Naughty Dog working on a New IP for Vita (and out around launch)

- Should have been called PSP2.  People just think its a new psp like psp go

- Should have been able to BC psp games

- Should have come out before last xmas.

Vita would have been a hit.

I agree with you. Why don't they put their best developers on the Vita if they want it to succeed? This is from a hardcore PS fan.
