Well the first Xbox did not deliver either, yet the 360 managed to give the PS3 a hard time. So no, it was not a lost battle when the Vita launched.

I wouldn't say it didn't deliver since it was a brand new product and competed with nintendo hand in hand.  PSP was well known because of sony was in the handheld market so it sold strictly off of brand name for a while.  XBOX was not a brand name.
