Forums - Nintendo - Wii U is now 1 month old and has sold 1.8 million units. How is it doing?

How has the Wii U performed so far?

It's doing spectacular! I'm blown away! 126 10.09%

It's doing really good, can't complain. 418 33.47%

It's doing good, not as ... 269 21.54%

Could have been better... 176 14.09%

It's doing poorly; Wii did much better! 127 10.17%

Still can't believe they... 133 10.65%

Total:1,249

Too early to tell. So far it seems to be doing good in US, great in Jp and horrible in EU

I haven't followed sales much so can someone tell me how zombiu is doing? Success of such titles will really encourage other third parties to put more effort.

The future is also heavily dependent on how the other two will handle their consoles. Both the 360 and PS3 can have some significant price cuts + their future consoles (the nature, price, games etc of them) will play a big part in the coming year or two.

Either way we are heading into a fascinating year for all gamers :D

Wii U is doing great and doesn't need more games to drive sales because every Nintendo nut doesn't have one yet and because everyone who doesn't have one doesn't have NSMBU, which is the killer app. By next fall they will need something stunning like Mario Galaxy, some mainstream sellers like WiiFit, and at least one or two big third party titles to keep Wii-like momentum. I suspect we will see all announced by or before e3, but there's no rush. They will sell out the initial run of 5.5mil regardless so the hype train can wait.

Well i totally agree. A lot of Wii U future success depending on how much suppoirt it will get and what Microsoft and Sony will over for thge next gen. Right now its impossible to judge if the Wii U will be a failure or a success. Only time will tell us the answer.

Yeah, pretty much this.

Yeah. As someone rooting for Nintendo's success, I am hoping that the remainder of this year before the unveilment of the nextbox/ps4/whatever will be dedicated to aggressively pushing out games (don't you dare delay pikmin 3 more, nintendo!) and securing more 3rd party ports, if not exclusives...

E3 2013. Gon' be a big deal for the future of the gaming industry.

Yes, you're totally right; Nintendo needs to push the games they've already have got and announce new, great games even before E3! And I'm expecting this E3 to be one of the best ever! Sony and MS will show off their new consoles, and the games, and Nintendo need to counter that with exellent 1st party games and 3rd party exclusives. It's gonna be epic!!

Yes, it's really hard to make any predictions just yet how things will play out in the coming years since we don't know anything about PS720 yet. People like to think they know, but they really don't. Next year's gonna be epic for us gamers!!

From experience I've seen that teases of new games don't really do much to spur sales.

Actual game releases or price drops do, not "well look at these games we have coming six months from now".

Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 were unveiled months beforehand for example and didn't help 3DS sales.

Showing more on next year's lineup couldn't hurt, but I don't think it will actually have much tangible impact on sales.

They need a game that actually is releasing in the 1st half of 2013 to drive sales, not the promise of future games.

I also think it's a far bigger question to ask "what content does Nintendo have upcoming that appeals to non-Nintendo fans for Wii U?".

They either need to make headway with casuals (so Wii Fit U has to be a blockbuster and can't go the way of Nintendogs + cats and Oni Training on 3DS, where those trends fizzled out) or with non-Nintendo core players (so Rayman or The Wonderful 101 needs to be a blockbuster hit bringing in non-Nintendo fans). Otherwise, they are headed for GameCube-Land .... a system supported mostly by Nintendo enthusiasts and ignored by everyone else.

The last part is spot on. I don't really think casuals will return for Wii Fit U, it'll sell a million or two, but I'd be hard pressed to think it'll do much more than that... Bayo2 could be that core title that will lure hardcore gamers to buy a Wii U, if Nintendo don't have a surprise planned for us that is with a new announcement...

But they need to get this machine going before E3!!

Don't worry, Ninty fans, Sony and MS can still save Wii U!
How? - you'll ask.
Just copying the tablet and making it a standard feature of their next gen consoles, so that 3rd parties start using it in their multiplats!

Well, they could be tempted to copy it once it becomes successful and widespread enough, but then it won't need to be saved anymore!   Like boy scouts helping old ladies to cross roads that they had absolutely no intention to cross!

haha that example  is  hilarious, but anyway i think if  they do copy but make  good  use  of that technology , we could en up receiving the freshly baked cookie the  boy scout got for helping the old  lady that didn't want to cross
