Forums - Gaming - Me vs Mom: School shooting influenced by gaming

THis genuinely doesn't seem to be an issue in the UK - most parents here I know happily hand over the games to their children and let them get on with it. My friends and I had a stage of playing nothing but Vice City when it came out and I played Die Hard on the PS1 - I've never shot anyone. Hell I've never even intentionally knocked someone in the street. For all the millions of people who play these games, it's an inconceivably small amount that go mad and kill people. And even then there is no way to prove with absolute certainty that this was purely down to a video game. This video made me very very sad. America is always on a witch hunt to blame something. I ask simply this; why not make a huge concerted effort to get rid of guns?!

What an awful video. It's why I enjoy living in the UK with the BBC, and other sources of news like The Mirror and The i. Very little bias from the modern press, only really papers like The Sun or The Daily Star which are like that...

...but enough of that. Your point is correct. The only reason there would be any sort of shooting is if the person initially was messed up. Videogames have nothing to do with it; people just wish to find a scapegoat. TV shows are far more graphic, infact, but since you aren't actively DOING these things then it's OK? Did these crimes only occur 10 years ago, and beforehand there was no crime? Because if so, then fair play, there's a correlation. But that means nothing, in this case because it's not true. Videogames are not responsible for this crime, if any.

What exactly do you have against the video? The anchor moderating doesn't make any claims. She says she watched some video of the game, didn't see anything graphic and asked general questions of the pundits about video games. The woman making all the claims isn't a Fox News employee and her views were countered by Geoff Keighley who does a very good job of setting the record straight. Then after the "experts" part of the report she talks casualy in studio and says several times that you have to read the rating on the box. But at that point it wasn't a report. It was a discussion between parents. They agreed that there shouldn't be censorship but are concerned about what video games they should give to their kids.

That Fox News report gets a lot of hate, but the truth is that Fox News didn't say anything negative about video games. Both sides were represented and the video game expert wiped the floor with the other.

I think too many people have too thin of skin when it comes to the topic of video games.

"It's a shame. If they would get to know our passion for gaming firsthand, they would realize that video games can be a way to convey in-depth stories by use of player choice, as well as acting on par with the best that a movie has to offer."

Because that's totally what gaming is about....

I LOVE ICELAND!

Had the same discussion with the wife yesterday. She's adamant that shooter games are horrible and partly responsible for these murders.

My points... well they are rated for adults. Additionally, they are no different than the many movies, tv shows, books, and theatrical plays have done for generations or centuries before. Point is, it takes parents to know what is and is not appropriate for their kids and even then to ensure that they are still taught the value of life and to have empathy for their fellow man. But blaming massacres and murders on something seen in any form of media is simply naive and a scapegoat for the real world problems we have as a society.

I almost beat her that day. After all, that's what I learned from Godfather.

Apparently the aurora cinema shooting and the sandy hook shooting were both referenced to in the last batman film.

I'm starting to wonder.

When we hear about pointless shooting like that, there's is always someone that blames video games.

However, when we hear someone has raped someone else, nobody seems to blame porn industry.

Or better yet, movies, despite being even more violent at times, aren't blamed for anything as well.

Why is that?

Does anyone know if the shooter was an avid video game player in the first place?

Now let's ban video games, the "media" next and lastly TV shows and movies. Wouldn't surprise me if it came to more censorship in America (you can't even say 'fuck' on TV - what the fuck)

Well, the f word is considered the big daddy of swear words here in America.   A lot of people would probably find it offensive...

Of course, go into the typical high school in America and you will probably hear it every few seconds... So not sure how much good censoring it does.  However, I can understand why some people may not want to hear it in their home when they are watching tv.

huh?  what are you talking about?

Everyone's using the crisis to play up their angle in life, even those who are yelling at everyone else to "shut up and grieve."

The one that annoys me the most are the people who blame it on taking god out of schools, but these anti-vg folks are a close second.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
