That's because Sony makes money on software, not hardware. As long as they can continue to release big budget exclusives that turn a profit the Vita is succeeding.

So we ignore the hundreds of millions spent on R&D, the advertising campaign, and the market and even though the Vita likely won't have made any real money back for Sony we'd still call it a "huge success"? I think not.

I forgot about the advertisement. That will eat up their profits. Like PSASBR their marketing it but the sales aren't impressive.

Exactly. And can you please remember to go into the HTML button (directly inder paragraph, second row of buttons on the top of this box) to post, and write your comment AFTER the <p> or whatever they are at the end. I do this and it prevents the thread from breaking as it is when you're commenting

Well I'm typing from the WiiU now. Seems to be going fine for me. Don't comment UNDER the post as you would on a computer or phone, you must actually click on the HTML button. This will open up a pop-up window which will look completely different to the normal one. Click on this box and it should automatically come up at the end, but if not scroll down and leave a line after all other characters. Type the post at the end as you normally would, click on "Done" when you've finished, which will return to the 'reply' screen as per normal, however your text will now exsist underneath the person's you quoted. Press submit and BOOM, all done. A normal post. If you try it you'll see it's just as simple, it's just harder to see when you're quoting someone when you do it as your currently are, and it looks less tidy.

Anything more than the N64 or GCN.

why do people always abbreviate it GCN?  You are referring to the Gamecube right?

GameCube Nintendo. They can't use NGC because that's already taken by.. something. I can't remember off the top of my head.

National Geographic Channel .

Anyway, it should have 40m at the end of the gen. A number like that ensures decent software sales for a handheld (tie-ratio is always lower compared to home consoles) and should've covered R&D cost and the like. Still, it can only be called a success if it spawns a successor. Realistically, I'm not convinced it'll ever beat GC/XBox levels of sales and ends just under 20m. It will also likely be Sony's last portable. I don't want to be a nay-sayer and usually I'm more optimistic, but for the lack of a better word; it's 'doomed' to failure unless a miracle happens. Holiday sales as of now, except the 'just-above-mediocre' Black Friday sales aren't something to write home about.

Selling more than the N64 or GC doesn't really say anything. Software attach rates for handhelds are always way lower than that of home consoles, so selling around 25-30 million units lifetime would mean disastrous software sales.

(Sorry if someone already said this. Won't bother reading through all posts.)

OT: I would say around 50 million units should be enough. Not many expected it to perform PSP numbers, so in a shrinking market 50 million should be enough to consider it a success. Especially if the 3DS can hold on to that third party support.

When it's starting to pay itself off.

No, that's not what I said. I'm saying it's all about software not hardware so saying some arbitrary number is useless.

Very true, but if you expect a SW tie ratio of 4 or 5 then you're out of luck.

If it makes Sony money I guess.
