Forums - Gaming - Next Gen consoles!

The Steambox and the Alienware X51 aren't consoles. They are standard PCs that play standard PC games.

That leaves Ouya as the new entry and it's more like an Android phone with a controller and HDMI.

None of these things are direct competitors to the three next gen consoles.

100% this. not even close to the same market. Ouya is a platform for game dev. as one part of its uses from wht i've read, although it has NAMCO BANDI as one of its publishers.

Alienware X51 is priced ($699) as wht it is. a high end PC. does anyone no more about this alienware device? i'll google it.

Valves console is heavily restricted, so its uses narrow quickly, as does its chances for success, and will likely have little multiplatform support.

Youre listing pcs as consoles? And ouya? You might as well list every pc, smartphone, and tablet that is out now and call them consoles as well..

That's it. We're in for another video game crash.

Yeah lol, imagine that. I wasn't around for the first one but i'm sure as heck I wouldn't want to see one happen.

Yay!!!

The Ouya is, as they admitted it, meant to be a "disruptor" in the market place, much like what the Playstation did.

Anyone who owns an Ouya can develop games for it. This is a completely different strategy of the consoles with lockdown on the indie marketplace, and more geared towards the old days when you could program a game on your Apple IIe, Atari ST or Amiga and publish it. If it gets a lot of indie developers ion board, it may catch the big consoles out, and they'd be forced to shift their policies accordingly.

Realistically, the Wii U, PS4 and "XBox 720" are the only consoles that really matter ...

The Steam Box will likely sell poorly compared to the mainstream consoles but will (probably) establish a niche market. For PC developers it will be worth supporting because it simply means making sure your game plays well with a gamepad which they (mostly) already do to support other consoles.

The other systems will do what every other small company does when they enter the console market, they will crash without ever making a dent.

Ouya (?)

Imagine an Android based home console that plays nothing but mobile games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouya

I'm aware of what it does, I just meant I don't know what it's competing with. Seems to be in its own niche category... very niche.

It's competing directly with eSfere (http://www.indiegogo.com/eSfere) and indirectly with Wikipad and Archos (and others)

Unlike Ouya, eSfere plays ALL Android games on your TV without any special programming needed but also without true analog sticks.

There are already a few of these Android based systems announced and more to come I'm sure.  Most will fail.  Someone will have a hit though.  I'm waiting for someone to make a full-on tablet/gamepad (like Wikipad) that also displays to the TV - (Like Ouya/WiiU).  I'm sure it'll happen and when it does, WiiU will be in trouble because it's casual base isn't that discerning.  Don't get me wrong, they'll want quality games, but there's a lot of quality games on Android too and more released all the time.  Just maybe not as deep as what Nintendo (sometimes) offers.  Even is this supposed gaming tablet that lets you play on TV costs $500, it'll be precieved as a superior value to WiiU because it's a full tablet, not a touch screen.

If Apple creates an igamepad - watch out.  Instant success.

What is with the absurd amount of consoles arriving this next gen!? There is the WiiU, Xbox 720, PS4, SteamBox, Ouya, and the one I just found about while reading Game Informer, the Alienware X51. I don't know if I should be scared for the industry or happy for it..what about you guys?

Wii expanded the market and Apple has expanded it even further.  Gaming used to be a 'geek sport' but now it's pretty universal.  Consoles still cater to the gaming enthusiast crowd 'core gamers' and that market is still mainly 720/PS4 and to a lesser extent WiiU.   PC crowd is getting broken up with steam Box and Alien but may take some console gamers (we know too little to judge) and Ouya, eSfere and such are competing for the audience Wii and iOS created - so they'll likely take some share from WiiU and maybe 720 (Kinect crowd).

However as tablets increase in power yearly, they'll quickly close the gap with consoles, get gradually higher end games and tablets and Android (iOS??) based games systems will progressly pull more and more people away from consoles.    MS sees this which is why the next system will be so multimedia heavy and have such dynamic features (projected images, etc) to keep people coming back to it.   PS4/WiiU I think are in a lot of trouble as their market will erode.  Nintendo having launched first can potentially squeeze out one more home console before consoles completely go the way of the dinosaurs, but for Sony I think PS4 will be the last hurrah and while it may be great, I don't expect it to do even PS3 numbers.

You must have forgotten Nintendo TVii and Nintendo's all around multimedia push they are making now.

As for Sony? They are in serious monetary trouble, but any so called moving away from Console market is also wrong if they improve their situation, like all the others they will simply evolve and adapt.

For Microsoft? This has been their goal for well over a decade, when they bought WebTV they wanted a presence on your TV and Xbox is everything they wanted, but I see the next iteration of the console leaning more on those multimedia type features and much less on "Core" gaming in the future, especially its next console, I think for them its all about penetrating the market and getting their device in your living room for media purposes, syncing with your computer and the cloud (which is why they have discontinued home server). It is a huge giant strategy way beyond just gaming (even though they gaming to get in the door).

Here is hoping Nintendo is most successful in this endeavor and microsoft is the least, because I easily see MS walling off their garden more and more (Windows App Store?).

Well the game industry has been growing since it's inception really, and I belive that it's growth it going to start to plateau. When this happens, competition is going to decrease, and things are going to change. I believe that either Microsoft or Sony are both moving to more of a "entertainment box" rather than a gaming console, Nintendo is nintendo and will probably stick to their guns and maintain steady sales, but I think the age of classic consoles, and console cycles is coming to a close. I predict that there will be some major shakeups.
