To the OP, if the PS3 dropped to $299 soon, then it will most likely reach 30% market. (it only has 10% to go). Now will they do it? They can if they want to. I think $299 was the origonal price point they wanted to hit at launch, but was forced to launch early due to the 360 coming out faster then expected. If they lower it to $299, they won't look desperate, they will just be achieving the price point they wanted to hit in the first place. If Sony was allowed to wait until they thought the console was ready, they would have released it this Christmas, and every negative aspect of the PS3 that ppl have would have never existed. My guess is there will be a price drop around the release of GTA. Plus, I think Sony would like to, for once, force MS to make a move, and not look reactionary by lowering the price based on something MS has done. |
actulay the wii is controling the price wars right now by forcing the comp to lower price to catch up

um... no... which price drop have you EVER seen that actually "hurt" sales????....... |
Hurt was probably the wrong term ...
In the short run you will always see a spike in sales from a price cut, but in the longer term there can be no noticeable improvement if people doubt the popularity of the system; if Sony dropped the price again, every news story about it would talk about how rapid and unprecidented these price reductions were, how NPD data shows the PS3 being dominated by both the XBox 360 and Wii, and how desperate Sony must be to save the Playstation brand (these types of comments do not improve people's impression on how popular the system is).
As I said before, the only way Sony could pull this off is if it is in response to Microsoft cutting the price of the XBox 360 ...

actually no its not because it has not dropped the price at all. wii is controlling the market not the price. if wii was 300 it still be selling.
sony needs blu-ray to take off and needs ps3 to do that and will not have all 3rd parties leaving... 3rd parties want an install base and sony will make sure that happens because being the leaders in the next gen DVD and the game wars is more important then making the ps3 profitable right now. and remeber the only divison to lose money is the game dividson so sony has huge bank accounts and have made money year on out as a whole company because of its other divisons. remeber when the ps3 launched it loss 200 bucks a system. it cost sony 800 to produce and sold it for 600. now its a fact that it cost them 400 bucks to make a system... that means the 80 gig is being sold for a profit RIGHT NOW. there fore if they drop the price 100 bucks they will lose half as much as the did before and sell a hell of a lot more. its a smart move and id say it will happen this year count on it.

dude....do u even read THIS SITE... the ps3 for like a month now has outsold the 360... and if you think that wasnt because of the 40 gig price drop to 400 bucks just look at ps3 sale on THIS SITE before the price drop..... i mean they sold like 80k a wek on all 3 regions....why did sales pick up....and STAY up because of a price drop................
@DNo--how can you say the wii isnt setting the price bar--the only reason the others are droping right now is so they can try and catch the bar the wii has lowered---you said it yourself "if wii was 300 it still be selling." they could have easily released the system at that point but they chose to enter the market at 250--setting the bar for price
plain and simple if the wii was not at 250 the 360 and PS3 would still be priced high
and right now sony wil not catch up to the wii for gen winner---its a moot point withthe wii looking at a life cycle of 4-5 years and the ps3 clocking in around 8-10 there will proably be a new wii out and then ....gen over and on to the next gen

What happens if this rumor is false? Anyone that heard the rumor probably hasn't purchased a PS3 and will be more hesitant to do so. Sony has conditioned the consumer to expect price cuts, so these types of rumors are easily spread. The bigger the rumor becomes, fewer people will buy PS3s. This is why you don't constantly cut prices, because the consumer will wait til the next price cut before buying.

i dont think microsoft and sony are trying to be lower then the wii.... i think they are trying to hit mass market price..... why because 400-600 is a lot of cash. i think sony is trying to get to 299 faster then 360 NOT wii. if sony was a price hore like nintendo then the psp would be 129.99. the ps2 would be 99.99 by now. wii did nuthin wrong in having a set price for this year sony and microsfot did so they are fighting... never once did sony say "we want to match the wiis price". they want the ps3 to be the HD console of choice.... does that mean if they could sell more then wii would they not be happy.. of course but the consoles are different and there is know way a suped up blu-ray and the strongest machine (console) in the world will be near the price of a console with 5-6 year old tech. and i know everyone on the planet would pay (if interested) a little more for a ps3 then they would for a wii. i no i have all systems in every war and i no if the wii was any more then 300 bucks i would not get it. but i bought my ps3 for 600 and so did many millions of others. most on this very site.....
Crucial; yes. Bot not quite yet, let the software move some hardware before reducing the price again would be best imo.
