Forums - Sales - Wii U sold 40K units during UK launch (CONFIRMED)

Sh1nn said:

this is probably a mistake. Wii U launched on friday, that's 3 days of sale.

So it's two days... GFK weeks ends in Saturday (eg. 1 December 2012).

Anyway all releases are two days in UK.

Nintendo numbers are first 48 (Friday launches)

the non nintedo consoles days vary

I have to check but all releases in UK are two days (48 hours).

Do people not understand: limited stock available. It sold out of its initial shipment within 48 hours (http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/48611/wii-u-sells-40k-uk). More are coming. You cannot order the thing on amazon.co.uk without its next shipment which is subject to arrive on December 4th

CHECKED AND CONFIRMED!!!

The release date in UK is always in Fridays... the only exceptons are PSP (Thursday) and PSV (Wednesday).

Games are released in Fridays too.

GFK tracks the sales for the week until Saturday... so 48 hours or 2 days.

Some big games release on Tuesdays. CoD usually does, and I think Halo 4 did as well.

But yes it is normally Friday.

I don't really believe those figures are that low at all. It's sold out everywhere round here, and my friends around the country have confirmed this. No way is it that low.

well the article did say it sold out.  if 40k is the real number the question to ask is why did nintendo ship so few?

Im guessing we are getting the same conflicting information about the UK launch as with the US launch.  Officials are saying its sold out, but people on the ground are saying its not.

Nintendo is out of WiiUs storage, because they did not ship more units for that area and the stores bought them all. But there are units still sitting in the stores, because people dont care :)

So Nintendo storage of WiiU is sold out, but the console is not sold out in the stores.

It's easy to sell out when you ship so little.

And if they had more stock it would have sold out anyway. If ps3 had launched at £425 today it would struggle to sell 1,000 let alone 40,000. The uk is a much harder market these days. Unless you have the apple logo people don't go gaga over you here. It isn't specifically nintendo. If things don't improve here the xbox will struggle far more then this because it will be more expensive.

For 48 hours, to completely sell out is a great accomplishment.

Unfortunately, as Rol alluded to, many people hoped for (and are now prematurely celebrating) the failure of Wii U.

Also, of course the PS3 and 360 are better values for the consumer. They each have a library of hundreds of games, and thousands of people online ready to play them.

The marketing I've seen sends a rather concise and lucid message, but I'm afraid I haven't seen everything. No access to American television :( Moreover, It's impossible to state that most people consider the Wii U an add-on without some kind of survey. Anecdotal evidence holds very little weight.

In the end, it's only day 16 so the doom and gloom is far too soon.

i don't know what you've seen out there but here in america i've been left confused as to nintendo's marketing strategy.  not that i watch a ton of tv but all i've seen the the batman AC commerical.   why advertize a late port over mario?!?   seems like a bad decision to me.

Speculation...fun, isn't it?

Of course, releasing an underpowered console at 425 would be a killer lol. Don't see how that is relevant.

It sold 40k though and they shipped 50k as far as I know, so it didn't completely sell out

well I'm basically taking the quote about retailers reporting sell outs and using that but meh. The rumored figure was 25,000 so they got more out there then they expected to. That is something people here haven't made a note of. They have more stock then they expected in the first place. This isn't flopping. Its more of a case of slow and steady here. I think vita had good numbers at 100,000 for the time.

As for the ps3 thing I am saying that things have changed here and the public doesn't buy much outside of things required anymore. The claims britain is out of recession is bs I say.

Yikes! That's significantly worse than the Vita's launch numbers. (64k)

1) That was 4 days for Vita vs 2 for Wii U

2) Vita then dropped to 17k the next (full) week. If Wii U has stock available, it will be well ahead of 17k

3) UK as a basis for comparison will always help Sony consoles over Nintendo ones.

2) Well I would hope it doesn't drop much because of the holidays. Vita launched early this year and had no holiday sales to help it.

3) Why is that?

3) Because Sony consoles always do quite well in the UK compared to how they do in the rest of the world, and Nintendo consoles always do quite poorly in the UK compared to the rest of the world.

Did you read kowenicki's post? This is factually incorrect.
