Forums - Sales - 3DS vs Vita: 3rd Party Sales

Well, I'd also add a little blip for games that will be joining the list soon.

Rayman Origins is rounded to 250k, Persona 4 is there with its release in NA and EU, Assasin's Creed: Liberation is shoe-in for it, and Declassified is as well.

I already know that people are going to start talking about the fact that we need to wait until the Vita sells more to come to a conclusion, and that the 3DS userbase is much larger, etc. etc. but still, 3rd parties aren't doing that bad on the 3DS.

Well this theory that third parties do poorly on nintendo stems from western developers. Not developers as a whole.

It was my understanding people were saying 3rd parties as a whole.

This isnt that surprising. 3rd parties have not released enough games for the devices yet. Give it a year and it will probably be clearer.

All true.  Persona 4 & Assasin's Creed will make the cut-off once this week's numbers are in, I'd imagine Rayman Origins might sneak past too, and CoD will (unfortunately) make the cut off in a couple of weeks.

OP obviously heeded my warning in the other thread about making this comparison before this week's numbers are in!

Regardless, it doesn't really make it any more impressive.  It would just be 4 v 29 instead of 1 v 28.  By doing it this week we just get maximum effect, but the general 'impact' OP was going for would still be the same.

My thought.

3DS: 22.64 consoles -> 23.62 3rd party games
Vita: 3.34 consoles -> 4.45 3rd party games

The % ratio is much better for Vita and remember that we have P4G, AC:L and CoD just out now, 3 third party games that actually sell well and will easily get over 0.25 next week (except for CoD, but it will probably get there sooner or later). Also a funny thing:

23.62 - 22.64 = 0.98
4.45 - 3.34 = 1.11
;)

Vita gamers are more willing to buy 3rd party games. The average sales of a game at 0.08 for 3.34 Vitas vs. 0.14 for 22.64 3DS? This would indicate that 6 million Vita gamers would put the average sale over the 3DS score. This is something that can matter, but in order for this to become a factor, Vita finally needs to start to sell. It has to reach that 6 million level as soon as possible, early next year would be awesome. This shows that Vita can sell much less hardware and still win over the 3rd parties, but it has to sell. It's not selling now.

I knew someone would say this, but that definitely isn't conclusive at all.  Fact is that the Vita's 1st party titles barely sell anything (comparatively speaking), which means that the ratio almost has to be higher.

Yes, I am aware of that, but the "good" thing is, that there is no sign for the 1st party Vita games to gain any momentum, so it will remain a free reign for 3rd parties ;) With 3DS you can't argue that everyone is waiting for the next Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kid Ikarus, SSB, Luigi Mansion, Pokemon, Prof. Layton, whatever else Nintendo comes up with and Monster Hunter 4. Not that much space or expectation for 3rd party games.

We can argue in general that the history of handheld gaming in general doesn't show up a big attachment rate.  Look at the vgchartz for each handheld *console for games that sold 1m or more and you'll see that even the DS didn't sell too many games with over 1m copies sold.  Consoles do much better.

True, but it's a bit of a different situation now. Developing a game for DS cost like $5, while when it comes to 3DS you actually have to step up a bit and bear some costs. It's cheaper than Vita, but probably more expensive than PSP, so the numbers have to be bigger than they were on the DS to give a simmilar profit. Plus the DS was a dream for pirates, so no wonder games didn't sell well. 3DS and Vita haven't been broken so far.

God, would it kill Vita in just one day if pirates cracked the console...

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Its imortant to remember that from the systems launch every single Vita game is released day 1 digitally as well as in retail and no one seems to be tracking or be able to get hold of digital sales, so we don't know the true figures.

We can however say that the above games have almost certainly passed 250k mark including digital sales:
-Persona 4
-AC: Liberation
-Rayman Origins

I buy almost all my PSV games digitally, someone really needs to give us some sort of idea of those sales. I know Next Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 1st week digital sales were 10% of their overall sales. The game was confirmed to have sold 230k at the begining of november, yet its tracked at 199k on vg charts, maybe that additional 30k is all digital (15%). I'd expect it to be a bit higher in the west and to be very high for some titles (metal gear solid HD collection/rayman/Ragnarok).

Install base kills the Vita and I have a feeling that whatever Sony does about it will be too late. I'm pretty sure most third parties have jumped ship by now and even if the Vita starts a glorious comeback it would take a lot of time for third parties to release something meaningful. I don't see how Sony could keep the Vita afloat alone for a year until third parties have something to show.

Vita hardware is pretty decent but the Software is just garbage to mediocre for the most part. Maybe I'm just buying the wrong games.

Pre-price cut, Nintendo sold as many 3DS's in three months (and already had a million selling game) as it has taken Vita to do in a year (or nine months if you don't count the launch in Japan last December)

a system with over 20M users and only has 8 0.5M sellers? no wonder everyone is investing in smartphones.

I agree with this.

Think about it for a second, the 3DS, which is the most popular, best-selling handheld in the world, which is destroying its only direct competition in the floundering, lack-luster, disappointing Vita, only has 8 0.5M sellers.

Smartphones definitely could be impacting this.

This part of the story can only be definitively concluded when you compare the performance of 3rd parties on 3DS/Vita with the performance of those on say GameBoy.

Something I don't feel like doing right now

It has only 8 - .5m sellers of 3rd party games, yes.  However, it's library as a whole contains 20 sellers of over .5m, 6 over 1m, and 2 over 6m.  Vita doesn't even have a million seller yet, first party included.
