If Sony can cause such a meltdown with just 5.2% share, imagine if it reaches 6%!!!

no meltdowns.  just clarification.  Justofored to as you think they climed to 5.2% and are heading for 6%.

they didnt REACH 5.2% marketshare.

they FELL to 5.2% marketshare, the others just fell by more.

a little under 8 months ago Sony was @ 1.9% global Market share in The Mobile space, last time i checked growing in market share to 5.2% is not falling but is an increase in market share.

You are comparing monile phone market share with smartphone market share. Mobile phone market share is still 2% or less.

"You are comparing monile phone market share with smartphone market share"

which is exactly the same thing as comparing dedicated game handheld market share to the smartphone market also. you cannot have it both ways, if is not the same than why is it being brought into the argument?

Many companys have dumped making full featured phones and now produce only smartphones, that is exactly what sony did infact do, they no longer make full feature phones and at the time Gartner had them @1.9% market share in the global market, Now taking  just the fact that Sony no longer makes full feature phones anymore they are the 3rd largest smartphone maker with 5.2% it is one thing if you were including full feature phones into the mix, but in Sony Mobiles case their market share has increased not fallen because they no longer make those dumb, and full feature phones..

So by your logic, if you Sony started putting a mini retaracting dildo in their phones, they would have 100% of the cell phone market.

Also, Sony smartphones are considered very mid-range. They don't sell any must have phone that is a hit with the public. You get a Sony smartphone because you can't afford a "good one". They surely can't be that profitable, remember the playstation smartphone, that was discounted to hell and back and still didn't sell.

Them hopping out of the convential phone market is a failiure not an improvement as you seem so desperately to want to see it.

oh please, god you and other's belittling is gruesome to sit HERE and put up with this , while the mod's get you A FREE PASS!

"Also, Sony smartphones are considered very mid-range. They don't sell any must have phone that is a hit with the public. You get a Sony smartphone because you can't afford a "good one"."

thats very rich because they do infact make high end phones, what do you consider a high end phone? I know the A: do you?

And Sony computer entertainment was not the one pushing the Xperia-play ericsson was, it was promoted by ericsson, and no one here really tracked the sales number for such a phone, do you have those? of did you even bother to check what the sales for that smartphone was? or did you just say it did poorly because you think it did, not really knowing how well it really did. you are the one that stated this:

"They surely can't be that profitable, remember the playstation smartphone, that was discounted to hell and back and still didn't sell."

I say prove it with number's if you cannot, than that does not make your statement very true now does it? for one if it was doing so poor, why would or did other carriers order the smartphone over after seeing it bomb so much, why did they order such a unit if there was no demand for such a machine?

I keep hearing it sold very poor, well how many did they sell?

this is pathetic. this site does not add in xbox Market share numbers for the xbox because now the xbox platform is on other parts of Microsoft ip, but yet here you are  and other's bringing in a part of the market that has no bearing  on this smartphone market thread, dumb phones? Sony's production on them was phased out late 2011 putting negative spin once again with the very same people in ever freaking + sony thread, on something Sony really have had no real control when Sony ericsson had the main control over products.

Now that Sony increased its market share in smartphones to #3  you and other's are looking for once again any and every excuse to rain on any sliver of the good news with negative tones to offset any good news about Sony in every freaking thread?

And many say this site is mainly PS3 user's fanboy site? really?

its attitudes of certain people on here that have mainly once again kept people posting in other parts of this forum and its mainly the same d@mn people.

Translation: I will always come to the defence of Sony and it sucks that this place isn't like N4g where my love of Sony is appreciated.

FYI, its even worse to group yourself with like-minded people. It becomes a group mentality where you all convince each other that something is all rosy when in fact its not....like N4G.I spend my internet time among my haters. It grounds you and shows you the weaknesses of your own camp.

Embrace the negative Sony news...its reality and it won't go away. Use it. Focus on the good with the bad.

So if samsungs marketshare increased massively and Sonys only fell slightly surely thats a sign for optimism? As Samsung may not have affected Sonys marketshare at all? So they are staying relevant in the Smartphone market where others are becoming shells of their former self?

Yeah that makes sense, a fall in market share is a sign for optimism

A point mssed is of course that these figures include the shipments of the new line of xperia phones, whilst RIM and Nokia are rebooting their line up and so shipments were declining.

Give it two quarters and revisit this thread.

yeah ...unless of course you miss his point entirely. Which you have.

Samsung and Apple are dominating even more. It's a positive sign that sony is the least affected from this. We have yet to see how well Odin and Yuga will do as well. They are not even out yet. As for Nokia...well time will tell. You should honestly be making threads about them right about now. Given their financial situation. And how bad their fall has been.

Seriously..it's hilarious how you tried to point fingers at slimbeast :D

Someone is overlooking the fact (clearly written in the OP and in a table posted in the 2nd page of the thread) that the smartphone market grew by more than 45% (the whole cellphone market a little less, but more than 44%) and while Apple and Samsung grew a lot, and Nokia, RiM and HTC fell horribly both in market share and units sold, Sony fell a little in market share, but it climbed rankings up to third, and, more important, it grew quite nicely in units sold, more than 41% YoY. 41% is less than the overall market growth, but it's still a good performance, particularly if we consider that many important competitors are plummeting. Not comparable to Apple and Samsung's growth, but good.

LOL, calm down, crikey. It's just my opinion on it.

You need to re-read what I actually typed and just take it for what it is - someone who doesn't agree with you :)

Reading a few posts here, what I got out of it is: We cannot be optimistic for Sony at all. Absolutely no positive discussion for anything Sony; nothing but doom and gloom. But, let's be optimistic for Nokia and Windows Phone in general.

My bias and everyone else' of coarse.

Not really, it's just some see it negative and swear that's the correct way to view it. Then there's the people who will try and make anything look positive. I like to think I'm in the middle, but it just so happens this isn't really that positive, if at all. The proof is that if it was positive, it wouldn't need people to try and spin it that way and the people saying it's negative would look really stupid by now.

As you can see the person responding to me went a bit hysterical about my comments.

It's not so much Sony but more the people seranading Sony that's the problem, yes some would love to see Sony fail. But I tell you what, they'd love to see some of the Sony supporters fail even more.

Threads like this are a gambit and will get eaten alive if the clear proof of success isn't there.

Why should we celebrate a companies success anyway, in this case it's even worse, you want us to be positive about a company that's in 3rd place, not only 3rd place, but 3rd place by a very long way from 2nd.

You make a thread about how good Samsung is doing and I'll support it, because they really have taken massive market share from Apple. Sony....well....ummm....what are we celebrating exactly?

Couple that with the person who created the thread and....well, I don't really need to say anything else.

So you essentialy answered your own question... What are we celebrating exactly? Sony taking market share from Apple and Samsung. Proof of success is there.. their cell phone sales has risen, and their market share has increased. Why not just give them a golf clap?

Heck people are clapping and cheering that blackberry 10 is still on schedule and Nokia got their lumia 920 out the door is and making good sales figure, even tho their market share is still abysmal.

Because a small increase is nothing to clap about perhaps?

After all when Wii become market leader did many gamers praise Nintendo for turning it around? No they kept calling the Wii a fa and every week posted threads it would fail.

So if this wasn't enough to impress people on these forums, do you really expect a growth from 4.8% to 5% to impress them?
