Not screwed.   Contact Nintendo.

You're only screwed if you do nothing.

how does this excactly works ?

like say my console is bricking (ok never had a nintendo system die on me but if) outside of my warrenty do I still have to send my console to nintendo so they can fix it and transfer my profile to the new console (like ms did before they had the online transfer to new console thing ?)

or can I buy a new one since buying a new one is sometimes cheaper than fixing it outside your warrenty time (2years here at least) and use a tool to transfer my profile.

Sending it in could be one way but the infrastructure is now there such that that shouldn't be necessary.

When you contact Nintendo, inform them of the new console's Mac address.   The old console will be locked out of your account and the new console assigned to it.

I admit that this is speculation on my part as well.  But it's the logical conclusion based on the infrastructure rather than the negative conclusion being thrown around based on nothing.

thx, does indeed sound logical ...

but I hope the wiiu is as sturdy as my other nintendo consoles/handhelds since non of them died on me before and I think I owned every piece of them you could buy in europe except the gb pocket (edit: and gamecube, how could i forgot this -_- ) ...

Yup. If impressions continue in this way I'll wait until Zelda is announced/released. At least that was how I get the Cube and Wii.

People are trying to ready too much into this. It is not that different than what was said for the Wii.

Because when my Wii died, I had to send it to Nintendo, which fixed it for $75 (plus $5 shipping). And almost everything was transferred over (I lost about three saves files because I had a memory failing issue and I had to reload my bought content).

So I doubt Nintendo will cause everything to be lost.

Ironically, this costs Nintendo sales because people repair rather than buy new.

PS -- For most purchasers, this is not a big deal.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

It would be nice if people would learn how to pay attention.  It was stated early on that it would be possible to access your Nintendo Network from multiple sources (including your phone, tablet, computer and other system), but that it would not be available at launch.

Things to do besides being glued to the internet all day waiting for Wii U news. Posted it because I seen it on Kotaku. This is a horrible feature that shouldn't be there in the first place. Locking IDs to memory cards is one thing, but an entire system in general is bad. Also nowhere does it state that they will change it. It states they will be able to link it to other devices such as phones, and FUTURE Nintendo machines. Of course a simple firmware upgrade could fix the atrocious system altogether.

You'll have to recreate your account and readd your friends, but I'm sure they'll let you keep the games you bought and paid for.

This is why this is only a temporary issue.  Nintendo will have a fix for this shortly.

of course they will add that in the future. Hopefully this will be an easy system like the ms one or sony one or even better.
but right now as it is its not good.

A system update is all it'll take.  Just like the one that let you boot games from memory cards on the Wii in the "clean out your fridge" days.

Which took them over 2 years to implement.

Not that i'm too bothered about this. Customer service will transfer things over in the event of a breakdown, no doubt.

@PullusPardus: If you bought your console out-region, you could possibly get someone in the correct region to place the call for you.
