Forums - Nintendo - Why Doesn't Nintendo Just Make Games Like Zombi U On Their Own?

This is one thing that really drives me nuts.

Nintendo has some of the most talented game designers on the planet. Very, very rarely do they ever release a game that's not of high quality.

So if game's like Zombi U and Ninja Gaiden 3 are so important to the Wii U, why is Nintendo "stuck" hoping and praying that the likes of a Ubi Soft team working on a minimal budget and Team Ninja come through with them?

Does anyone really doubt that Retro couldn't make a better "Zombi FPS" than Zombi U? Or EAD couldn't make a better ninja action game than Ninja Gaiden 3?

Nintendo. Please. Sit down. Stop the "we're Walt Disney" act. Even Disney is smart enough to understand they needed a division that could make movies aimed more at adults, so they have the Touchstone Pictures division and also were involved with Miramax (technically meaning Kill Bill is a Disney picture).

Enough with the "we're going to let third parties do their thing". Leaving third parties in charge of your appeal to 14-35+ year olds is a recipe for disaster and always will be if you're Nintendo.

These are not Nintendo brands, that's why.

Nintendo is actually involved with Ninja Gaiden 3 though, and also Bayonetta 2.

I don't think Disney develops Miramax projects and just slaps a Miramax label on them either.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I ask this question at least once a week. I'd love them to do something brand new, a "mature" title for the core gamer. I'd love to see their take at the zombie survival genre for example. But I guess a zombie survival game is a lot more risky than a Zelda or game X featuring Mario.

And why can't Nintendo make games like that?

Why entrust a huge part of the demographic you're hoping to get with a system (14-35 year old males that predominantly play on the PS3/360) to some random studio at Ubi Soft and Tecmo when you have internal teams that are just simply far more talented?

If it's so important to the platform to have this kind of content, then for gawd's sake Nintendo, stop relying on the same failed formula of hoping that third parties this time will give two craps about your platform.

They will give two craps about your platform when you make your own Halo/Assassin's Creed/Uncharted that sells 4-6 million copies worldwide, *then* developers will look at the system and say "hey there's a big market for a high quality matoooor game on Wii U".

It doesn't even have to be like 4-5 franchises, just make one, extremely high quality new IP tailored towards this market segment. Let it set the bar for other developers.

Maybe their internal guys just don't want to make games like that because it is not their taste? Nintendo does definitely hire other studios to work on m-rated games for them though. There has been speculation that they are looking to acquire certain studios that specialize in M-rated games as well.

Nintendo should consider acquiring or establishing a new studio dedicated to coming up with new brands that would interest "core gamers"...
I know a lot of people hate that term, and hate what it stands for, but Nintendo has done a good job in the past of appealing to different video game fans...
Would it be a terrible thing if they had a studio that tried to appeal to the "core"???

Have a nice day...

I'd be willing to bet more than a few of them wouldn't mind a break from the constant Mario/Pokemon/Animal Crossing/even Zelda (gulp) games.

Doesn't even have to be something ridiculously violent ... how about a spy game ala James Bond? How much blood did GoldenEye have?

Nintendo's core gaming base are the Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, and Donkey Kong fans; and they are served by several of Nintendo's most major dev teams.

What I ment by "core gamers" was the general, unspecific "core gamer audience" that apparently likes "dark" and "mature" games...
