Forums - Gaming - The Greatest Console ever?

The greatest console is...

NES 42 11.80%

SNES 72 20.22%

N64 38 10.67%

Wii 14 3.93%

Playstation 23 6.46%

Playstation2 127 35.67%

Atari 2600 2 0.56%

SEGA Genesis 11 3.09%

Magnovox Odyssey 2 0.56%

Xbox360 25 7.02%

Total:356

PS3 for me as I have never been so excited to get any other system and I loved the games. I was also old enough to pick out the good games in the store and not just buy a game because everyone else did (like I did with GTA on PS2) but seeing as you didn't have the PS3 option I went for Ps1.

The PS2. In my opinion, it made games appeal to the masses. I mean it was EVERYWHERE. It was on TV shows, movies, the news, and even installed in peoples' cars. It also had the widest array of games than any other console.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I don't think ps2 was the greatest console made, it didn't have the fun factor of the ps1, the ps1 was an amazing console that shook up the industry, like people have said there were more important consoles before it that also appealed to a mass market such as the nes, the ps1 had a much bigger impact than the ps2 did in the industry and more so arguably best console made.

I vote for a tie between the PS3 Vita combo pack and the Wii U.

Yes because you haven't even played the WiiU

I haven't played the vita or the PS3 either. I just have a strong feeling about this. Sort of like the morning after I drink a lot of beer and eat too many hot wings.

PS2! The perfect combination of casual and hardcore game, a game console that can truly appeal to everyone. Plus the massive library of amazing games was pretty nice. The controller was great, it wasn't overly expensive, it was the reason anyone even bought DVDs, only downside was the rather weak online compared to the Xbox.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Actually the multimedia aspect of a console is very important.  Can't believe you seriously think the Ps2 ranks that far ahead, it brought nothing to the table as those games would still have been released without the Ps2, though on the 2 technically superior consoles that gen. When cross game chat is universal next gen you'll understand why it was so important.

Important, based on what?

Why do you assume that I think the PS2 ranks far ahead of the 360? I haven't provided any sort of list. Both consoles are pretty insignificant in the big picture. One other thing that speaks for the PS2 though is that it still allowed for a middle ground to exist while the 360 (and PS3) eradicated it. Nowadays it's either AAA blockbuster or small downloadable game. Quite a bleak outlook for the future of gaming.

What benefit does cross game chat really bring? You can talk to people who aren't even playing the same game you do? Yeah, I'll be all over that once I can do that on a console I own.

Yet the dominance of the Ps2 killed Sega so how was that good for gamers?  You've still given no reason why it ranks above the 360 by any reasonable standard...

Personally I wouldn't be able to pick. If we are strictly talking about the best then that would be peoples opinion. f we are talking about what brought the most to gaming then it all fuses because they have each taken things from previous consoles, then that would make one of the newest consoles the best because they would then add the most. So out of the new consoles the Wii brought motion controls, X360 brought achievements, XBL with party chat, and PS3 brought the blu ray player.

One of the many reasons why the NES is the greatest console ever is because it can be considered the ‘foundation’ of the videogame industry. Foundation, in the sense that the NES is what the gaming industry stands on today – a good foundation.

Now, while some people would argue that if we’re talking about foundations, then consoles before the NES should also be consider as foundations of this industry. I would submit however that those foundations were poor and could not sustain the videogame industry. That house and industry before the NES fell because of not having a good foundation.

Nintendo and the NES, on the other hand, built up the current videogame industry and it has remained standing ever since. The videogame industry has had lots of new facelifts from the to time, console generation to console generation, but it’s because of the good foundation of the NES and its hardware, its games, its developers, its publishers, its vision of an industry, etc, etc, that make the videogame industry the pinnacle of entertainment it is today.

And that is just one reason why the NES is the greatest console ever.

Such a great post! Everyone should read this and then try to argue that NES isn't the best ever.

It feels like you're asking two different questions in the OP.

By logic it would be Magnavox, it's what started this whole charade. Thank you Mr. Baer.

By personal preference it would be psx but i already chose Magnavox.

Well, what I wanted really were for the community to sit down and think about which console really is the greatest. Which one have had the most impact? Yes, Magnavox were the first console, but they (consoles) probably were bound to become popular sooner or later. In many many ways NES shaped the business more than Magnavox did... IMHO =)

Ah I do not disagree with you, because you are right. But like i said, the question in the op could have been clearer.

Maganavox - credit for the idea.

NES - without a doubt the biggest influence

PS - deciding to make it disc-based

(Atari for coming up with pong...)

And while i put the ps up there, i'm not even sure if that's such a big deal.

Progression in graphics is absolute bull at this point in time. So we're supposed to awe every week at the newest GPU and CPU the PC market throws at us? We're no apple fans are we?

You might want to start a debate on where these consoles would be ranked for importance and influence they had on the industry. But then again, who gets to decide the ranking ;P.

Yes, you really should have made my point MUCH clearer... I'll keep that in mind next time :P it feels kinda stupid doing a "Most Important Console" right now though since this thread is up and running. Next year, when the PS720 launches though ;)
